Where/how did you source your new steering box?

And let me know when you are throwing those 40 DCOEs into your neighbors pool so that I can fish them out. 😁

A friend had a low mileage steering box, I replaced the bearings seals etc, the old unit had a small flat spot, that made me mental. As for the 40’s they will probably end up in a friends 02 in the future.

Quick follow up.  Stuart is back in action.  Although I thought the problem was ignition related, the immediate issue turned out to be fuel related.  I carefully backed out the idle jet on the Solex and with it came a BIG chink of debris.  How the heck did that get in there?  Afterwards, it started right up effortlessly and idled a smooth as glass.  Special thanks to @ray_ and @Luis for talking me through some details (and keeping me on task).  I'm still not sure about that hot condenser...

Today, I gave it a dew bath.  Chilly nights make for wet mornings.  It was fun to towel it dry.

Yesterday, I did my fifty mile shopping route, taking the scenic back roads heading out and the highway home.  The car got another three-comment-barrage within a minute in the grocery store parking lot.  The first guy asked if I've owned it since new.  I said, "no, I was ten then."  The second guy asked, "'74?" and then said, "I had an '80, they're tanks!"  The next lady asked "what year?" followed by, "my brother had a '65!"  :)

It's getting kind of warm here, so I replaced the foam in the heater vents, to keep the hot air from blowing on my legs.

The carports have been turned into workshops, so all the vehicles are camping out these days.

Subaru GL! I had an 2wd manual 84 in college. I loved that thing. Spare tire in the engine bay. I got it up to 192k before it would overheat if I drove more than 15 minutes.

Good eye, it's an '84 as well, but it's  2/4wd, hi/lo 1.8l 4 speed, with 265k (and still running cool).  I think it has a whopping 72hp.  325k on the '72 Suburban beside it.  I have the last year of the series in all three, coincidentally, not intentionally; although, I'd like to think they'd gotten the early-year kinks sorted out by the end.

I don't know how many miles are on my 2002, but I'll bet it's got quite a few.  The long-time owner before me drove it daily too.

Exploratory Surgery Begins!

Off with the head today after triple-checking compression (wet & dry) and leak down tests.

Problem is the original engine w/ 143K miles is gulping oil. 1 quart every 120 miles!

Was hoping to see a simple head gasket failure... but there was no oil in the coolant or lack of oil pressure. Nothing was leaking and I just noticed blue smoke in the exhaust on heavy deceleration.

Yanked the head, manifolds and carb intact.

Would love to have any feedback on the condition of the piston tops after 5K miles since the head was rebuilt.

Next step is to pull the pistons and measure everything.

Bad valve guides?  I got a bad set and my machinist caught the error in time. They were tapered on the id.

really interesting
