What did you do to your 2002 today !

Front bumper reinstalled. When I purchased the car the bumper ends at the fenders were not attached. Had to find/purchase new hardware for that. Also had to drill the (meticulously located)hole in the LF fender which had been replaced under a prior ownership. The (original) bumper itself is not quite straight either which didn’t speed things up 🤣. I’ll need to drill the three holes for the reflector as well…

Hunted down annoying judder. Found that right half shaft was binding in two spots per revolution. Performed autopsy for cvj’s and both were bad. Spares to the rescue and shaft with refreshed joints is back in car. Turns over nicely. Hope this solves it.

Parts run!

 

I was able to find a 02TI/TII brake booster for when we will swap over to the dual solex carbs in our 2002 Touring.

It's still in pretty good shape and has the original sticker on it, it's hard to make out the numbers but it's the correct one. I was able to get it for a very reasonable price (250€)

The same seller was also selling a sunroof for a BMW E12, when comparing the part numbers the early E12 used the same sunroof as the 02 Touring! (Tourings sunroof is bigger then the sedan)

It's in a lot better condition than our roof

And finally I got some new hinges, the ones we had were a little mangled, the slotted holes are deformed quite a bit as well..

Installed M3 starter motor. Interestingly neither of the original starter motor bolts were actually installed. I think the motor builder forgot them. The only thing holding the starter in place was the rear bracket.

Crossed off an item on my squawk list:  Installed O2 sensor on head pipe.

Found a spot 5 1/2" from the front of the collector. Good position with plenty of room to install/remove with a 22mm wrench.

I have 2 sets of vent windows, so I spent the last few days taking them apart and piecing together the best parts. The glass had decades of mineral build up, water spots, etc. I tried glass cleaner, vinegar, 000 steel wool and nothing worked. Then I tried Barkeeper's Friend and it worked perfect. 

 

Not sure I want to go to the extent @mvliotta did and remove the anodizing, but I did what I could with the cleaning up what's there. I started with the glass frame to start with. I may wait on the rest until I get new trim for the rest of the car and see how they look next to each other.

That's about where mine is mounted.  What kit did you install?  Do you have a spark plug that fits the threads just in case you need to remove the sensor?

I thought the spark plug in the exhaust went just before the outlet...

The O2 sensor in my picture doesn't work and I used it just to check for any clearance issues. 

I'm using a M18 x 1.5 oil drain plug until I decide on the sensor and read-out. Easy to reach with an open-end wrench.

Any recommendations?

This is what I use to plug the AF ratio bung.  Looks like it's also a M18.

I use the Innova 3855 wide band AF ratio gauge.  Actually replaced the sensor with a new one today after about  5 years of service and it's working properly again.  Recommended it.

Messed around with the carb. And the car still runs! 😎

 

My first time really digging into a car carb (Weber 32/36). List of changes: 

  • Changed to a 150 air corrector from a 170 in the primary to better match the average on @2002#3 jet table.  (170 seemed too lean. The exhaust had a very strong smell.) Thanks 2002#3! That table is an awesome reference. 
  • Adjusted the float from about 42mm to about 40mm. Was getting a strong gas smell in the engine bay. 
  • New needle and seat. The needle in the carb was all metal? 
  • New accelerator pump diaphragm assembly. I think this was leaking since I was getting gas pooling on the intake manifold. 
  • New paper gasket for the lid.
  • Installed a phenolic spacer. My fuel was boiling on longer drives and hotter days.

A drive yielded a little rougher driving when cold, but my choke also isn't working (I think the linkage is gummed up). Overall it felt better on the butt dyno and I think the transition to the primary was a little smoother. Pretty happy.

Nice. What you need to do is dial it in till it's perfect then pull everything off, spend too much money on a couple of Weber's (Delorto's in my case) and start over :)

I never learn. I'm changing my perfectly running '74 RD250 into a 350. Always starting over 😖
