What did you do to your 2002 today !

Big day today for me. 5 years after I last started this motor before rebuilding it, I cranked it over... and we got ignition!!! I ran it till she warmed up. It got a little rough at that point, which I expected as I hadn’t plugged the vacuum spots. I will work on that next, including refining the timing and resetting the tuna can contents. Oh joyous day! Here is a pic of the car outside of the garage. I drove it in and out several times. I cannot wait for the street. It calls me... I tried to upload a short video of the motor running but it wouldn’t load. I can’t wait to see you all out on the road.

Getting Zouave prepped to install its Winterton-reconditioned injectors, I popped the delivery valves out of the KF and am soaking them in Evaporust for a couple of days.  The delivery valve silver steel washer gaskets all seem stuck in their cavities.  Not sure how I’ll get them out without scratching something, but I have new ones on hand ready to install… meantime, all the intake runner gaskets came off with a gentle pull.  Except one. There’s always one…. The upper double gasket had clearly been cemented to the plenum.  Not 1/8” of it could be tugged loose, and it was hard as a rock.  I finally got a tool on the lip behind it and managed to pull some of the skin off.A302233D-2646-4CC8-8A62-F6E58C6179B7.jpeg  After that, a couple of hours of putty knives and razor blades, alcohol and brushes, and I’m still wondering why somebody felt the need to glue that one down…. And whether I should go with blingy gold nuts and washers when I reassemble it.  Or just go with the slightly rusty stuff I have.21F45910-C612-4302-A6EF-F7C47EB4716E.jpeg

Just in case you are unaware,  the OEM M8 nuts for the intake are 12mm, rather than the traditional 13mm.  Easier access for a socket in those tight areas I guess, but a13mm socket will fit.  If you've got the correct "blingy" nuts, I'd go with them,  or soak your rusty ones with the delivery valves. intake m8 bolt 12mm head.jpg

It's been ages since I removed those crush washers.  I was forced to as I had weeping fuel from the holes in the head of the pump when the valves were torqued down over the old gaskets.  Even though they caution against using a metal tool,  I used a dental pick to tug them out.   No problem.

What's the plan?

Tesla motor! ;-)

I mean, re-seal it and fix the boogered exhaust stud threads, new motor mounts and clean things up.

Cheers,

Couldn’t wait. Took it out after a few adjustments, adding a seat, seat belt, and it did great! Damn I missed driving ‘02s... next is to add a bunch of weight strategically and torque the suspension. Then start the process of confirming I did everything right.

Found one issue - the brass heater valve looks to be leaking coolant from where the pivoting arm enters the body, and only when the cooling system is under pressure. Do I get to go and spend a couple hundred more to fix this or does anyone know of another way?

You may get away with putting a couple new o-rings in it.  There are old threads that discuss the size you will need.

Several years ago I ordered two pair from the o-ring store and sent the extra pair to a faqer in need.  He reported back that one was the wrong size and ordered two correct ones, so he could return the favor and send one to me.  It's been too long for me to be able to pull the dimensions out of my head, but someone might chime in with them.  It is a very cheap fix, if that's all you need.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
