It looks great: my only suggestion — you knew I’d have a suggestion — is to swap those bright-finish screws and washers for black anodized screws and washers.... ?

 

Your homemade shifter side panels look measurably better than Clardy’s chintzy-plastic side-panel covers! ?

Tried turning the rheostat MANY times.  After pulling the switch out and getting it in some light, the coil and the contact are actually very clean.  Without disassembling the switch, I can't tell for sure what the problem is. 

 

One thing I did notice was a white powdery residue on the black work surface I was using.  It had to have come from inside the switch, and looked like what you might find if a dry cell battery leaked.

 

I rarely drive this car at night, so I'm not too concerned, but if I have the chance to get a working switch, I'll probably do so.

You must be clairvoyant!  I was actually planning to do that very thing.  The bright finish was all I had lying around.

That white powder is corrosion of the rheostat element.  Thoroughly spray the element with Deoxit or CRC contact cleaner and then, as Jimmy said, work it back and forth some more.  That sometimes fixes it when just working it back and forth doesn't, and you spray it down without disassembling it.
