Types of Dashboards

I’d say you’re right on that. The parts books that I’ve browsed make no mention of it. I have a few more to look through, but nothing so far.

My May 69 2002 has the dividers on the dash.  Believe there are at least (2) older Roundel articles including one by Mike Self that reveal the introduction of the ribbed dash.

My 1664819 02/05/69 base model has a smooth dash. So within that 4mo period the change likely happened. That’s cool to know.

Does anyone know if the UK or Australian markets got the 1-piece dash? I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to source one for my RHD tii (June ‘75).

A couple of specialist 2002 wreckers I know say they’ve only ever seen 2-piece dashes even on 75-76 squaries. Could the 1-piece possibly have only gone to some markets like the US? Or maybe only LHD?

Cheers.

1. Maybe.

2. Yes.

Surely we have a number of forum members with RHD square taillight cars (I’m not certain if I should refer to the Modell 73 touring as a square taillight, since it retained round tailights!). They are eminently qualified to answer this question.

If I look at the parts catalogue, however, it does appear that the two-piece dash was the last dash used on RHD cars, e.g., 2002’s from VIN 1653980 onward. Unless, of course, my parts catalogue is missing a page... ?

U.S. models for 1974, 1975, and 1976, on the other hand, received the LHD one-piece.

Below, page 51/77 for the last RHD cars (two-piece) and 51/80 for the last LHD cars (one-piece).

Regards,

Steve

@Conserv

Ok,  so the 2pc began in April 71,  but there were 2 versions.  Right? I have a Euro version.

Euro has no labels for switches or a Fasten Seatbelt sign.  Export having English labels and a Fasten Seatbelt sign.

I'm converting to the euro dash as my Canadian imported car has German heater control labels.  The factory used an export dash otherwise.

The answer is yes.... mostly: U.S. and Euro. But U.S. replacement dashes ended eons ago, so replacement dashes for the last.... 40-or-so years have been Euro.

The subtleties distinguishing the various original dashboards, however, are many, as I discovered when I took a look at the parts catalogue.

Let’s separate dashboard uppers from lowers, and only look at U.S., to simplify the process! ?

Remember, we’re only looking at LHD cars, for the U.S. market, from April 1971 (Modell 71 introduction) to August 1973 (Modell 73 introduction).

Upper Component

# 1a. 51451809993 - 2002 and 2002A from Modell 71 to VIN 2580042 (2002) and VIN 2532126 (2002A)

# 1b. 51451809422 - 2002tii from VIN 2760001 to VIN 2760235

(my comments: the ...993 and ...422 dashboards don’t have any seat belt warning light holes; the ...422 tii dashboard adds a clock hole)

# 2a. 51451819441 - 2002 and 2002A from VIN 2580043 to VIN 2585137 (2002) and from VIN 2532127 to 2533172 (2002A)

# 2b. 51451820546 - 2002tii from VIN 2760236 to VIN 2762630

(my comments: the ...441 and ...546 dashboards have seat belt warning light holes; the ...546 tii dashboard adds a clock hole)

# 3a. 51451823690 - 2002 and 2002A from VIN 2585138 to Modell 73 (square taillight 2002) and from VIN 2533173 to Modell 73 (square taillight 2002A).

# 3b. 51451823691 - 2002tii from VIN 2762631 to Modell 73.

(my comments: the ...690 and ...691 dashboards were updated to accommodate changes in the heater controls, e.g., blower switch moving to the slide controls, so is the change to the upper component solely a change of labels for the former blower switch? the ...691 tii dashboard adds a clock hole)

Lower Component

# 1. 51451817886 - 2002, 2002A, and 2002tii from Modell 71 to VIN 2585137 (2002), VIN 2533172 (2002A), and VIN 2762630 (2002tii)

# 2. 51451823694 - 2002, 2002A, and 2002tii from VIN 2585138 to Modell 73 (2002), VIN 2533173 to Modell 73 (2002A), and VIN 2762631 to Modell 73 (2002tii).

(my comments: the ...690 and ...691 dashboard were updated to accommodate changes in the heater controls, e.g., blower switch moving to the slide controls)

# 3. 51451823694 - can be used in place of 51451817886.

Remember, this is solely for U.S. cars! Simple? ?

Best regards,

Steve

Don' forget that Euro spec 02 dashboards don't have a fasten seat belt billboard or the gearshift pattern printed on the dash. I scored this crack free one piece Euro spec 02 dash at an automotive flea market in Ludwigshafen, GE and mailed it back. The heater/vent controls are in German. It now resides in my 74 tii. Before it was installed, the hole for the tii clock was carefully cut out.

Hi,

I just checked my RHD model 73 Nov '73 build Touring - it has a two-piece dash. Owned it 37 years and never knew!

We are here, Les, to help you newbies navigate these new-fangled contraptions....??

(Secretly, when I heard the two-piece-dash-on-RHD-square-taillight theory, I rolled my eyes. Until I cracked open the parts catalogue... ??)

Best regards,

There were four major variations (not including the Tii-clock cut-out).  I will continue to edit and add pictures of each (pictures by yours truly, unless otherwise stated).

1) Early-early Chrome-trimmed 3-piece dash  (separate sections for gauge surround, lower section, and upper section)

2) Early-ish 3-piece dash (separate sections for gauge surround, lower section, and upper section)

3) Mid 2-piece dash (separate sections for upper and lower. The gauge surround was integrated into the upper section.)

4) Late 1-piece dash (all combined into one piece. no split-seams)

As an extra tid-bit.... underneath, there were two different body-support structure types (that I am aware of), the changeover occurred with the round-to-square change.

Good info thanks for sharing

The 1966 three piece dash with chrome trim and non-padded lower section is very similar to the the 67-71 Euro dash except that it has the "BMW 16oo" badge affixed to the upper section vie pins which fit into grommets through the dash. This is the rarest of all 02 dashes fitted to 1600-2s produced through August of 1966. It's nearly impossible to find this specific upper dash piece in any condition.

And to answer an earlier question about when US 02s got ribs on the dashboard's "package shelf", it occurred sometime in March or April 1969.  My Feb 69 (1664801) car doesn't have the ribs, but I've seen cars with VINs only a few hundred higher than mine with ribs.  Anyone out there with a 1665XXX car with either a ribbed or plain dash shelf?  The changeover doesn't show in the parts book.  An early automatic (2531485) does have ribs, but then the first US automatics didn't hit the US until sometime in May-June 69...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
