  1. Hi, well it is an overcast saturday in the mid-atlantic region but a 12 year long run of the same car show is on the calendar and i will go. no rain where i am but within ten miles of the show it is misting and raining, depending which cornfield i am passing. the Deutsche Classic is a great All German Show in Oley PA. just in case you are close and want to try it next year. so the cars were great but wet. the food was good. my shoes were wet. my daughter was having fun with the camera. i will post those later. so my regular thing is to check out the cars and then circle the parts area like a buzzard. there was way too much VW stuff. but....... one guy sitting quietly was surrounded by totes of parts in bags and boxes. i like the old packaging just of the printing. so in i dive with sophia hovering and questioning some of the parts. i tried to be quiet so the guy might not figure me out so quick. but after a while i was explaining to the guy what most of the parts were. i also noticed about five people watching the BMW savant hold up parts and explain the use or where it goes. i have got to tone it down some how, sophia just rolls her eyes at me and lets me bumble on. so the following four pictures show some of the finds.
  2. Whoa, wait a minute. who ever took that subframe out has taken off a few too many bolts, if all you reall want to do is get back on the road. there is no reason to take the lower arms off the struts. this job is about three hours and with an engine hoist it goes faster and less shakey. even the motor mounts on the engine help to get the reinstall going faster. three bolts on the steering box, six bolts on the actual frame, four bolts on the sway bar, not the ends. then drop the inboard end of the lower arms this way the old frame falls out. then install the replacement frame. then you can learn to weld on the broken one while the car is still mobile. dirty subframe for sale with no cracks $100 plus shipping. stone
  3. Hi, why did you change the trans from 4-5 speed. did you replace the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft when you did the work? when the trans is in neutral and the car is running do you hear any rolling sound or dead quiet. the most likely drag on the motor is the pilot bearing. let us know. stone
  4. HI, the installation is really easy. but i recommend pre-fitting the parts before a paint job. also buy new metal "T" clips for the ends where you attach them to the door, hood, trunk and quarter panel. also get some washers in graduated sizes to make the nut have something solid to press against. for the hood and trunk, make sure to lower the lid slowly the first time to test where the ends of the clips reach. sometimes they can scratch the body if they are too long.the closure cilps are easy if you leave the "T" clip loose and then slide the closure clip over the gap with a plastic putty knife or windshield tool for glass work.in the past i have been able to buy the black plastic body clips with a rubber flat gasket on them and this seemed to keep them tight. blue masking tape can also make the job safer for the paint until final tightening. lets see what others add in. stone
  5. release the hand brake and put three wheel chocks on the fronts and the opposite rear. get a heavy mallet and a block of wood. put the wood against the center of the rim just over the lug nuts and bang hard on the block of wood. do the same for the other side . then move all the chocks back a foot and do it again. this time if you get them loose the car may move back slightly. as an alternative jack up one wheel while the other three are chocked and remove the wheel then beat the drum between the wheel studs until the drum is free. stone
  6. if the car has ignition points, reset them. this sound like a common problem i see on customer cars that do not have the point gap checked regularly. or you can check the dwell of the points, if it is less than 40 then the points are closing. stone
  7. Hi, i have several of these. i will have to check the ratio on them. i am not sure what 3:4 is but usually they are 3.64-1. let me know what ratio you need. stone
  8. this harness was removed from a 74 that was driven in to the shop and parted out. no wires were cut. includes the emissions harness too. it will work for 74-76 carb cars only. can be modified for tii. price $100 plus ship. stone
  9. hi, i usually attach the ground strap from the starter support bolt to the bolt on the top of the steering box. this has worked well for my customer cars. also make sure that the alternator is grounded to the block. good luck, stone
  10. that plastic piece is a guard for the battery when it is installed on the tray. the pump you may see in the manual and installed in the same place is a supplemental pump for carb cars. not for tii. stone

  18. the posts are right. base model now seems to describe carburetor cars. the cover you are showing is for a 1973-1974 tii motor. the 1972 cover has the alternator bracket cast into it. also as stated above these parts out last the body by 50years or more. if you are unable to find a reasonably priced cover contact me. i have multiples lying around the shop. stone
  19. Hi, that is an actual AC stud. the reason it looks too short is because it is installed backwards. the shoulder should hit the steel block behind the front cover and leave just enough to get the original bracket, washer and nut on the longer threaded end. i have removed too many of these in my time with water pumps. just take it off and put in the correct replacement bolt if you are not using the old ac bracket. stone
  20. this thing is the most amazing $20 i have spent in a long time. the box is water resistant, the bins all come out, they are separated by the lid and the things inside cannot move to other bins. i have bought four of these already and it has helped me organize 25 years of hardware. blue masking tape can be put on the top or on each bin inside.i have told several people about these boxes and they all agree with me after their purchase. multiple boxes snap together also. stone02
  21. this motor was from a junk yard that has closed. block vin 2760643. the head was removed long ago. the bottom end is very nice but the cylinders will need to be bored because of surface rust. this short block can be delivered to Vintage show. grand total $50. for someone looking for a good block to start with. just have too many parts. this one has to go. stone
  22. Hi, so some times it is the things you can't see. like working in the dark or in an area that only has one light. anyway this car sat for a long time as the owner has many cars and this 72 tii was giving him problems. so one night i went and helped him try and move it, the drums are stuck. then one nite we try and fire it up and the clutch is stuck to the flywheel. then he tries to diagnose and replace the distributor and the rear fuel pump. finally i get another shot in the actual dark and decide that the KF is not working. tonight i go over and the car is inside a well lit shop so i am preparing to remove the KF. by chance i decided to time the motor (TDC) so the work will be easier. thru the crack between the upper belt cover and the front timing cover i can see the belt does not turn when i rotate the motor. this is what i found, the pump belt, after about 40 minutes of parts removal and making one new special tool. so, two hours more scraping and cleaning ever tooth on the crankshaft and the KF pulley and the car springs to life immediately when the key is turned. fuel air spark, those are the three but again it some times is the things you can't see. next trip to the car is to put it back together and free up the clutch and release the brakes. stone
  23. i have many of these that are in good condition are you going to the Vintage? i could bring it with me. stone
  24. this may sound silly but which way is the big arrow on the heater valve pointing. also with you move the heat lever is the cold air flap also opening to allow direct air in without it being forced thru the heater core. let us know. stone
