Speaking of trunks, I believe its rare to see the original elephant hide strips adhered to the bottom of each fender well.

Some pics of the original owner golf tii I inspected.  Not sure where it ended up.  IIRC, some parts had been repainted over the years.

I'm still rockin' the tired elephant skin.   Some day I'll replace it with...what, I don't know.  I'm not sold on the new stuff.  Besides, I'm pretty rough on the trunk, still sliding crap around on a regular basis.

Pic from 2012.  No change since then.  Maybe a little more trashed.

Original parts not on my 74 2002tii

-Diving board bumpers  (Euro bumper conversion)

-Side marker lights/reflectors (deleted)

-Front seats (replaced with E21 Recaro seats)

-Steering wheel (replaced with E21 sport or Nardi 390mm leather wrapped black spoke wheel)

-Dashboard  (replaced with Euro spec one piece 02 dash I scored at an automotive swap meet in Ludwigshafen Germany and mailed back, no fasten seat billboard, shift pattern or pull knob white lettering)

-Radiator  (replaced with Silcon Garage 3 core radiator)

-Headlights (replaced with Cibie H4)

-Gearbox  (replaced with E21 5 speed

-Differential (replaced with E21 LSD)

-Suspension (upgraded with Eibach springs, Bilstein sport shocks, ST swaybars, and polyurethane bushings).

-Original 13" steel wheels and tires (replaced with 15X7 ET 25 Centra type 11 wheels and 195/50-15 Yokohama S Drive tires)

-Rear view mirror (replaced with E30 map light mirror)

-Antenna  (replaced with Hirschman red tip antenna)

-The list goes on for a while, you get the idea. It's a resto-mod car.  As for originality, I did repaint it in the original color, Sahara rocks!

Emissions on a 320i. Some people would use these when going to a 320i five speed to use the 320i speedo cable. I havent seen one done that way in a bit though.

On ‘02’s with thermal reactors — i.e., all U.S. 1975 models and California-version U.S. 1976 models — this box sits between the transmission and the speedometer and it tracks mileage, telling your “Thermal Reactor” service light to illuminate.

I think that is a mileage counter that would alert you via the seat belt warning light to change/check some emission's components on later '02s.  Often ends up breaking the speedo needle when it binds up!

+1

Sorry, Hal, I didn’t see your post before I drafted mine!
