What did you do to your 2002 today !

SteadFast,  First take pictures of each step so you can put everything back together correctly.  I did not and had to try multiple possibilities until I found the right combination to make everything work correctly.  My car is a 1970.  Newer cars have different cylinders.

  1.  Remove the cylinder from the steering column

  2.  With a Dremel tool with a small grinding wheel, gently grind the 2 rivets holding cylinder together.

  3. Gently pry the back plate from the assembly.

  4. Remove the core.

  5. With the key in the core, determine which tumbler(s) are not retracting fully. (I removed the offending tumbler and spring.)  Test to see that the cylinder core rotates freely in the housing.

  6. Reassembly the cylinder.  (I plan to use JB Weld to glue the back plate back on the assembly.)

Got some care packages from FCP Euro and Blunt - slapped on some new exhaust hangars (after I noticed that the car had none on the muffler, exhaust just chillin on the rear subframe) and a set of shiny center caps for the e30 steelies

I’m in the process of doing a complete restore on the rear suspension.  Putting the bitch spring back on is so much easier when it’s off the car!  Actually got to use the slot on the plate the way it was designed to get the spring behind it.

Installing the parking brake cable onto the lever may be tricky.

 

Also - I'm of the experience that the 'straight' portion of the upper springs fits behind the shoes, though I don't exactly know why (though I do have a guess). Btw, I've seen a number of photos with the springs installed the same as you have, so - well - maybe. -KB

I’ve never done this, I figured I could install the brake cable before screwing the back plate in if I needed to, when I get to that point, it will all be Much easier without the hub on. 
As to the spring, Just looked at the blue book and you are correct!  Wonder why?

IMG_20200520_090424276.jpg3.91 25% LSD in the house !- Arrived yesterday while I was removing the "speed relay(?)" to make space for the Malpassi Filter King that will ultimately supply the DCOE 40's. Just waiting on the repair sleeve for the tranny output flange so I can drive while the weather is nice before installing the DCOE's.
