I measured the amount of fuel dispensed from the Solex 40 PHH accelerator nozzles with each stroke of the accelerator pump.  If any of you have done this type of measurement, let me know if my approach was reasonable.

 

Equipment

--  a flexible pipette with a squeeze bulb ; a syringe barrel with scratched/etched 1-mL markings.  

Method 

--  Goal per Service Manual:  0.7 to 0.9 mL/accelerator pump stroke (squirt) 

--  Cut a small hole in the top of the bulb.  Fit one of the \ accelerator nozzles into the bulb.  Route the pipette neck/tube to the outside toward you.

--  Make 2 to 3 smooth, even, hesitate-less, and complete strokes (without the syringe) of the carb throttle lever/arm to purge and fill the pipette, immediately put the collection syringe in place, and make 10 more strokes.

--  Collect all 10 squirts of gasoline into the syringe.  Read the measurement. 

--  Adjust nut on the pump arm to deliver 3.5 to 4.5 mL/10 strokes.  Repeat to assure reproducibility.

--  Remember:  one pump serves two barrels; therefore, the amount/pump stroke is 2X what you collected (# mL collected) X (2 barrels) / 10 strokes = total # mL/pump stroke

--  Need more or less per stroke?...move the small nut on the pump arm in or out.

Result

--  Depending on the location of the small nut, I could obtain 3-6 mL/10 squirts. 

--  Each pump was adjusted to produce 4 mL/10 squirts.

--  (4 mL collected) X (2 barrels) / 10 strokes = 0.8 mL per pump stroke 

Remarks

--  Expect a quite messy and wet experience.

--  This method might work for other side draft carbs(?).

Bumpers arrived today very quickly from Vietnam. If anyone has questions on how these are packaged, here is a photo showing every part bubble wrapped and all major stainless bits bubble and blue fabric wrapped. Thumbs up in my book.

I've had 2 sets, one in the car I sold and one in this car.  I also have a proper set of JW Speaker full lights downstairs, still sitting in the box.  I need to do some rewiring before I can use the JW lights, but they've been down there for a while.  The superbrightled's are completely up to the task.

Chamonix ‘73 

 

I’ll likely never run a front bumper on this car (turbo kit waiting) but just in case I salvaged the reinforcements from the old left rail and installed them on the new left rail that was stamped for the carriage bolt type mounting hardware.

After that project was completed I set to flattening the welds securing the new top sheet to the right rail, sanded off all of the paint from the right inner fender, started cleaning some of the old primer off of the nose and POR’d some more of the nose and any of the right inner fender that had pits.

Not sure what’s next... I think it’s either scuff and epoxy prime the bay before hanging the nose or hanging the nose... decisions.
