  1. wire wheel it, sand blast it, oven cleaner, soak in pepsi or vinegar (equally repulsive substances)(anything with a heap of acetic acid)
  2. I need to replace both front seatbelts in my '76. The problem i have is that i need Beige coloured belts to match the rest of my interior. I've tried local manufacturers but none have beige thats a close match. I'm not even being that picky. Does anybody know of any sellers with new OEM belts or something very close?
  3. i'd never put anything back together dirty. my 3-spd is damn near polished from when i replaced the rear main seal. brake & parts cleaner and/or degreaser, kerosene, petrol etc. will all work great. just make sure you 100% it if you start it because anything you leave there will be more likely to circulate itself around the gearbox.
  4. depends on what height you want. if very low, then i'd be more keen to keep wheel gap/tuck even front-to-rear, than rocker height even front-to-rear. if you only want a mild drop like most do, maybe level rockers and smaller rear wheel gap will work for you. there's cars out there that are far worse for 'rake' than 2002's, old Cressida's come to mind, and lets not forget E30's.
  5. it was listed for $15,000 for a good couple of months.
  6. i scubbed my grille with a mild plastic polish and got it looking like new. i think i just used Vuplex, but any commercial plastic polish like Meguiars Plast-X or similar will work. this is the only pic i have. if you decide to paint, use plastic primer first. it goes on clear so don't overdo it, then just apply paint straight over it.
  7. i'm 23, my '76 is the third oldest car i've owned. new cars suck.
  8. 4x100 VW stuff is all exactly 57.1mm CB as well. Mazda is smaller (54mm) and Mercedes have only ever used 5x112.
  9. i'd leave the oil in it until you are ready to install it and do an oil change then. you can use most solvents to clean the casing. brake cleaner is especially good but i find the $2 cans of degreaser work well most of the time too.
  10. my miata has a welded diff (needed a replacement quick and got a weldy from a friend). it chews the tires heaps. i drive it on the street only and while it's ridiculous, predictable fun in the wet, it's also hard to drive responsibly and very uncomfortable with grippy tires, as well as making the steering much heavier (which would be even worse with an M20 i'm guessing) i plan on changing it eventually. i say get an LSD however you can.
  11. current news in a rough area of north australia
  12. well i know it's been a while (hard to get motivated in winter) but it turned out to be some crappy wiring and loose splade connectors on the starter inhibitor switch. i ended up removing the starter before i noticed this unfortunately, and replaced the armature anyway. now to work out why it's not pumping fuel...
  13. judging by the article and it's pics, your car comes across as honest and super-versatile and it made me want to go for a drive in mine.
  14. i figure there would be a few members who would like to be able to use the forum on their smartphone/tablets, and the browsers on such devices are often not all that useful for forums i've found Tapatalk to be good for most forums. There's another forum app. thats gaining momentum, i forget the name though.
