Indeed, that dreaded drivers side motor mount is no respecter of men...

Nor women.  They all crack.  Just best to pick a time and get it done / do it.

And if Tom is selling a plate, buy that one.

I did run across that pattern the other day.  I'd misplaced it.  I used tape to make it hold the bent shape, but I'd need a sub-frame here to confirm the fit before offering them up for sale.

The shape's a bit abstract and fitting it into the actual mount took some fussing.  In the end, I got the piece dull red hot and pushed it in while soft.  Before that insight, it was bend / test fit, bend / test fit, repeat... fussy and frustrating.  Now I could make them in much less time... provided I had something on which to test the fit

When I did my reinforcement in 2005, we cut a plate, ground to fit the channel, form the curvature with a 12lb sledge.  Fit like a glove!

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

This thread got me a little paranoid, so while I had the car on the lift to change out wheels today, I took a quick peek.  Looks like it was already done.  Yay previous owner!!!

As Jim said do it, at one time it was thought that driving style was the cause but then the crack started showing up on more and more cars even the proverbial lil old granny with a automatic, my thought is it's a harmonic crack instead of a pure stress crack but thats just my guess?

Fatigue for sure

Or just buy one from Ireland - $21:

I'm sure the IE part resolves the issue.  What it also does is make the part very thick- so often the motor mount doesn't fit well / only catches a few threads.  What I did was to shape a piece like what Tom has then box the section in (it's already a C, for those that haven't seen it) and leave a space to get to the nut- so full thread engagement and reinforced...

+1 for the Ireland part.  Why reinvent the wheel.

I saved $21 plus shipping and did not have to wait for the mailman to bring it to me.

Generally speaking, I find it much more satisfying to make sh!t than to buy it.

Can the fix be done with the subframe in place, or must it be dropped? Not that I want to melt my motor mounts.

yes, I did mine in place and posted photos of that on page two of this thread.  It is crude though, compared to the one I did for Andy's car, with the subframe removed.

On mine, it was done preemptively, with no sign of a crack yet.  I just figured it was a good idea while I had the steering box out of the way.

Pulling away from the house, I heard a strange thud, the steering wheel shimmied and the throttle blipped and then it all went back to normal.  Odd...then it did it again.  Pulled back into the garage, looked around the car and all seemed ok...then I popped the hood and pulled the motor and bam...The engine was flopping around.  Looking at the drivers side, I can see the separation just below the drivers side motor mount.  Now the plan is to find a good used subframe, weld in the reinforcement then swap it with my subframe.  Soooo...anyone have a spare subframe?  Preferably in SoCal...

Wasn’t all bad though. The after the part was removed a quick clean up on it and it dropped right into place ready for the second pass. Geez...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
