Dreaded front subframe crack....

Pulling away from the house, I heard a strange thud, the steering wheel shimmied and the throttle blipped and then it all went back to normal.  Odd...then it did it again.  Pulled back into the garage, looked around the car and all seemed ok...then I popped the hood and pulled the motor and bam...The engine was flopping around.  Looking at the drivers side, I can see the separation just below the drivers side motor mount.  Now the plan is to find a good used subframe, weld in the reinforcement then swap it with my subframe.  Soooo...anyone have a spare subframe?  Preferably in SoCal...

Yeah...thats what everyone says...lol...probably doesn't help its low, stiff, and I drive it like I stole it...lol

Yes there's only 2 types of sub frame for the 02, ones that have broken and those that are going to break. Why don't you repair the one you have if you line up a welder (if you don't weld yourself) it could be done in a day.

Why bother with another subframe?

It'd be easier to just drop it, fix it and put it back, no?

I now disagree with some of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book. 

I've switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results. 

I apologize for spreading misinformation.

I can appreciate that.  I noticed a bent trailing arm on my subframe, so I bought a used one from Roadhog0, intending to put all my new bushings in it, after cleaning and painting it, (of course), then swapping it in.  The idea was to limit the time with the car off the road, as well as replacing the bent piece. 

 

I could see a similar tactic being employed in your situation, if your front subframe has other issues to address, such as tired old rubber... or poly, as the case may be.

 

I preemptively welded a stiffener on mine while the steering box was out.  It wasn't easy reaching down there with both hands to tig that piece in, but I am glad I did it, I guess.  If the subframe ever comes out, I will probably pretty it up a little bit.

Nope...I had replaced all the bushings with Poly bushings so should be in good shape.  Just wanna get back on the road....lol.
