That signature '02 interior aroma

One of the joys of owning an '02 IMHO is the signature aroma when you open the door of the interior, similar to a MBenz of the era. What creates that? Is it the seating vinyl?

Actually I'm not sure, as I've removed all of the horsehair quite a few years ago when redoing all of the seats but eau-de-2002 still remains unchanged! Maybe the residual hair stuck to the glue lines on the underside plus the vinyl?

I got that wonderful smell yesterday upon opening the door.  This after several years ago reupholstering all seats without vinyl or horsehair, removed and replaced carpet, removed most of the factory applied sound absorbing material and replaced it with another material.  Only still original in the interior is the headlining material, the dash and door / rear seat cards.

Carpet sprinkles.

The more fun you have driving, the more sprinkles you get.

 

True on the aroma. 2002s have that smell. Alfas of the same era also have a distinct smell  but I think it contains a touch more engine oil.

45 to 50 years of decaying horse hair, seeds and stems, fart remnants, plus the carcinogenic off-gassing of vinyl interspersed with gasoline vapors

Neither of my cars have ever been smoked in (virgin ashtrays and lighter elements) and still have "that smell."  I agree with Andrew--it's the gummihaar, along with outgassing vinyl--what causes the film to form on the inside of your glass.  With perhaps a little eau de carpet thrown in. 

 

I could get into an 02 blindfolded and know it by its smell--same with my Renautls.

I bought a '69 2800 this year that's been sitting since 1985.  Talk about aroma!

I have notice that aroma is the same or similar in VW Porsche  Audi  and Mercedes of the 1960's and 70's. The interior suppliers are probably the same companies.

Thing is, I also recall that aroma in the early '80s when I started to drive a few of these cars too.
