Piloti Competition Driving Shoes

Cindy bought me a pair of Piloti Competition, specifically made for driving. Thin reinforced sole takes strain off ankles, knees and balls of feet. After driving Vern 730+ miles to Pittsburgh in a day with these shoes, I wasn't sore or limping like with Vans, Converse Allstar (low & high tops) or Sperry Top Siders.   https://piloti.com/collections/performance/products/competizione-red-black-white-performance-racing-shoe?variant=36592510477

PVGP 2002 Parade Lap

Vern, Cindy and I on the Parade Lap during the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, Sunday July 15, 2018. Photo by Kyle van Hoften. Missed the World Record for the a Parade Lap by 28 '02s.   The other pictures are of the line up and a few shots Cindy took while on the Schenley Park Road Course. The last pic is the rest of the '02s returning to German Hill to park.

Pittsburgh!

Drove the 750 miles in12 hours averaging 62.5 mph including traffic and fuel/bathroom breaks. Have the coveted garage space at the inlaw's house. Wore my Piloti driving shoes for the first time, first time driving a long distance my right knee didn't ache. Usually get out of the car limping because my knee hurts so much. Gotta be the shoes.

9.5 hours of detailing

Woke up at 5:30 am. Spent 9.5 hours today working on Vern. Cleaned & waxed the rear subframe, half shafts, boots and brake backing plates which still need some attention. Dismantled, cleaned, detailed and reassembled the sunroof rails and Golde wind deflector. Returned the ashtray from an iPod/iPhone dock back to an ash tray, that took at least 3 hours.

Under Hood Stickers

Placed all the under hood stickers, finally. Original and new there are some differences as some stickers are NLA like the 'BMW air pressure' which was near the left turn signal. So had to compromise with what is currently available.   Does anyone have a picture of where the Ate blue/white sticker goes in the brake booster?

Preparing for O'Fest 2018

VSR has officially finished Vern. Mario, Chris Langsten and I had punch list items, those have all be taken care of including the rear driver side wheel bearings, yet still need to put the engine bay stickers on.   Now the detailing begins for O'Fest in Pittsburgh in 3 weeks. Spent 2 hours cleaning the sunroof hardware and Golde wind deflector. Then yesterday 3 hours detailing the trunk, rear bumper and cleaning all the rubber on the car. It's amazing how much bodyshop dust there is, that stuff gets everywhere. Still have a lot of work to do to get him as clean as possible for  the O'Fest Concours.

Maine Registration and VSR

Registered ME Lobster Plate VERN 73 for another year, $98 well spent. Drove Rodney the M5 to VSR to put on the 2019 plate stickers and fit the Cocomat templates. Lisa the '02Princess won a set of Cocomats at The Foundation and gave me the certificate, decided to go Red/Natural.

Wheel Bearings and Playing Catch Up

Had quite the adventure! Vern's rear passenger wheel bearing wore out after well over 90K miles. Luckily I have several friends in the Cincinnati area who offered mechanical assistance, expertise and a new set of Tii wheel bearings from Larry Gray! The added bonus was I was able to see Lance White, Jason Gipson, Eric King and Scott Aaron. We were on the road again by 2pm.   We drove as far as Calvert City Kentucky. Woke up early and made tracks toward Paragould Arkansas to try and catch the caravan from Dayton Ohio. We caught up to them at a rest stop on route 412 arriving to a round of applause. We stopped for lunch in Mountain Home then continued on toward Eureka Springs. We stopped at the Arkansas Visitor's Center and had an impromptu '02 Fest when several cars behind our caravan stopped in as well. All 14 2002s drove into Eureka Springs in loose formation.

Personalized Service with a Smile

When Vern was having his Maine state inspection on Friday the 20th, Verona stickers for 2018/2019, tech found an oil leak from the rear of the valve cover. VSR's Chris Langsten, called me well after 5:00 on Friday saying he'd heard Vern needed a new valve cover gasket. Asked me to meet him on Sunday as I was passing through on my first leg down Arkansas for the Mid America '02 Fest. He suggested a commuter lot, I suggested his driveway, I arrived at his home at 10:15 am. Chris handed me a cup of coffee and set to work changing the valve cover gasket. After a quick road test at 3K rpm everything looked good. By 11:15 I was on my way.

Break In Complete

506 mile engine break in procedure is complete. Head retorqued, one valve was out of spec by 1/1000. Oil changed to 20/50.  Tech rewired the wipers to be work correctly with the stalk switch and wiper speed works now. All the grill slats were reglued and the missing one replaced.   The only problems/issues I've encountered/fixed: I had to retorque the all lug nuts as 3 had become loose on the driver side rear wheel, the rest of the wheels were fine. First night drive, noticed tach lights are not working, and headlights need to be aimed.   VSR has taken a complete running tired 1973 Tii, from September 18, 2017 to April 19, 2018 completely rebuilt the car from the ground up to a complete running fresh new 1973 Tii. The minor issues I've encountered speak volumes to the quality and attention to detail that VSR does. No rattles squeaks or clunks.   As token of appreciation I bought everyone who worked on Vern, a 1/43 scale White Box Verona Tii and gave Mario a 1/24 scale Anson Verona Tii with driving lights.   All I got was some stinking yellow tape and a 1984 Oktoberfest mug! Does anyone make Verona tape? LOL   Now Vern and I are off to the Mid America '02 Fest in Eureka Springs, Arkansas a 3600+ mile round trip. Hoping for better weather than last year's torrential flooding rain.   See you on the road! Andrew & Vern

Driving Impressions

367 miles of the 500 mile engine break in complete. Spent 4/18 driving 168 miles on back roads from Brunswick to Freeport to Gardiner to Wiscassett to Damariscotta to Brunswick. Some of the roads were pretty rough and there are no squeaks rattles or clunks. Vern's handling is very tight and predictable, love the new H&R springs, feels very sure footed. Was able take a "recommended 15mph"turn at 35. Tomorrow it's back to VSR for for an oil change, head torquing and valve adjustment and a few punch list items.

Dash & Interior

One piece dash is in. The correct two piece dash is in Las Vegas at the restorers and may not be done for quite some time unfortunately.   Interior is complete except for the passenger seat and shift knob.   Now the windshield can be installed.   Still waiting for hood trim and the grills from Speedway.
