Smartphone holder?

This is the solution I came up with using the ashtray’s ember grate as the mounting point for a spring loaded head off of a selfie stick.

It easily holds my iPhone 6 in a case.

This solution was cheap (less than $15), functional (landscape mode only) and secure. Oh and No holes were made in any original parts of the car so if you don’t like it, there is no evidence you ever made a modification to the car.

Note:

The 3D printable Cup Holder mentioned above can be found by searching the faq for “.STL”.  If anyone knows where the phone holder file can be found please post a link or search path to it.

You can modify the tray to hold the base of the phone, if you like the solution you can feed the charging cord from the back of the radio through the back of the ashtray to the base of the phone. Great when in use, close the ashtray when not in use.

I use this mount. It comes with a gel pad that sticks to the flat ledge on the 2002 and then the suction cups suctions onto the gel pad. The gel pad is very easy on the dash and wont cause any damage. Its great. Had mine about three years.

Please tell me you guys know about the Waze app and how it's the only way to avoid getting speeding tickets. Thus I need a holder for the smartphone.

Waze is not always accurate, there are several ways to avoid speeding tickets which are tried and true.

When driving across Utah & Nevada in 2016, I was at triple digits most of the time, when I stopped for restroom/fuel break, the slower drivers were pulling in to do the same as I was leaving.

Follow Eurotrash's lead and put a power adapter for your phone in the ash tray.

I have a mount made by Rennline for my P-car that I like and that could be DIY'ed to work pretty easily with a 2002.  It is a magnetic mount that, instead of sticking to your windshield with a suction cup or to your dash with double sided tape, has with a plate that sandwiches between the side panel and front panel of the center console.  The screws that hold the panels in place pass through the plate to secure it, so you're not doing anything permanent to the car.

The P-car console is, essentially, the same construction as our 2002 consoles, so it would be just a matter of cutting a plate to match the bolt holes on the 2002 console.  Also, the Rennline mount is expensive (b/c they're marketing toward P-car owners), so I think the same thing could be built with this $13 mount from Amazon -  Scosche MAGDMB MagicMount

The mount puts the phone in a great place that's easily accessible:

I've a Scosche mount in my Jeep, and the magnet is strong and holds the phone stable (enough for spirited driving and the kind of bouncing around you do in a Jeep, but maybe not solid enough for track days).  To mount the phone, you just slap it up there.  Super easy.  When the phone's not there, it is small and unobtrusive:

Here you can see the plate, sandwiched between the side panel and front panel of the center console:

Here's what it looks like:

The holes are where they are because the P-car console has forward facing bolts to hold the front panel in place and the mount mounts to these bolts.  On our 2002, the plate would be flat, because the screws enter from the side. I could see the plate being an inverted L-shape, with the long leg of the L between the side panel and front panel of the 2002 console and a Scosche mount stuck/screwed to the short leg of the L.  The L-shape could be made easily with hand tools from metal sourced from your favorite big box hardware store.

Here are the ways to avoid getting nabbed for speeding.

1. Don't speed. Simple, easy & effective.

2. Go with the flow of traffic.

3. Follow what the trucks do. If trucks are speeding, usually the coast is clear.

4. Don't be the fastest car on the road, this is asking for trouble. Let someone else take the risk.

5. Use a 'stooge' or 'rabbit' let them run ahead and keep them in your sight. They'll more than likely get pulled over.

6. Read the road, look ahead, many times the police a plainly visible.

7. Don't be aggressive, don't tailgate & move over for entering traffic.

8. Be careful of weigh stations and rest areas, police tend to hide there.

9. In Virginia, 9 you're fine 10 you're mine are words to live by.

10. Don't draw attention to yourself, this goes along with 7.

It might just be me but this needs some further explanation.

11. Drive in Italy where speed limits are merely a suggestion on the Autostrada.
