What did you do to your 2002 today !

Recommended Posts

It's been a little death over here.

Things slowed down quite a bit since the purchase of a house with my girlfriend (no worries there is a old workshop on the property so in the future, the touring will be very close at hand!) Hopefully things progress a bit faster then.

In the meantime I received the test panel from the lasercutting/bending service.

Very pleased with the quality of the panel, it's cut and bended very nice and crisp.

Only thing left is to punch the reinforcement ribs into the mounting tabs.

I was a little worried about these small mounting tabs for the touring as they are quite short in height.

Had a look over my brakes over the weekend and found out I'm looking at a full gut job. I was hoping I'd at least be able to save the calipers but it's looking unlikely; my front right is completely seized. I managed to force the pistons back in with a G-clamp, thinking any movement at all would be good, but 100PSI from my air compressor couldn't budge those pistons back out again even half a millimetre.

Next idea was to put them back on the car and try to push the pistons out hydraulically, only to find that my master cylinder doesn't do... anything. It doesn't leak, which is nice (the clutch one does 😭), but it definitely doesn't push any brake fluid either.

So, that's pretty much as far as I can go with the tools available to me. I suppose the next step is to repair/replace the master cylinder and try again once it works. Thinking some silly thoughts about hooking up the caliper to my E46 brakes and seeing if I can't do it that way...

Also contacted BMW Group Archive at their new email address (hdz.info@bmwgroup.com) and found that they're now charging for information. They want to sell you a 'digital birth certificate' for your car at a cost of €125! No thanks, fellas, I think I'll put that money towards my fixing my brakes.

A grease gun works well for pushing out stuck pistons.  I had to do that with mine.  The threads on the gun's hose fit the bleeder holes  [edit- they fit the incoming supply line holes, not the bleeders].  The nice thing about using grease is that they don't POP when they come out, like they do with air.  Then you'll need to clean the rust out of the bores.  In mine, the rust was all in the last 1/4", outside of the seal.

If you do buy remanufactured calipers, save the original bleeders because sometimes the new ones are too tall and will not clear the wheels.

let’s try not to get our two cars too close together. Yours is light years nicer than mine and it might get jealous. 😁

Your alternator is fine what you need is a new voltage regulator.

@Son of Marty new Hella voltage regulator just installed now. Dash light still stays on. Thought I should check the belt tension as I do think I left it a bit loose, out of spec. Checked it and it had come completely loose! The alternator bolt had come loose on the new toothed bracket.  User error for not tightening it down right. No more light!

It's amazing how much time can be spent on a car that's so small.... Also, I need some Youtuber to do a video profile of you and your cars, Barney. Your stable, garage, and drives in the Hill Country always look so incredible.

One question, @BarneyT, do you not run hood insulation pads? I am debating where to install insulation in my car. Pretty sure I will do some amount on the doors, floors and firewall, but not sure on the hood.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
