What did you do to your 2002 today !

With my car only a foot off the ground, I was having a hard time getting enough leverage to pull my exhaust apart. So, I used a couple ratcheting straps - one on the muffler to the middle bumper bolt and one on the resonator to the engine carriage - and a couple of pipe wrenches near the muffler joint - to pull it apart.

I pulled a engine and trans from a car, noted the disintegrated urethane mounts,

and added "replace engine/trans mounts" to the project list. -KB

Dang, is that normal to deteriorate like that? I’m planning on a solid mount shifter for my new 240 swap and planned on a more stiff mount to help with the shifting being chassis mounted ( AKG/Garagtastic) is there a better material for a street/ rally car?

The key takeaway is not all polyurethane is the same*, and parts/vendors vary in what they use when making parts (*base/compound, durometer, manufacturing process, etc). There are vendors whose urethane parts I trust, others I'm wary of. -KB

I tried to test fit the coil rack a few days ago and realized the coils wouldn’t fit over the 21mm hex spark plugs I was using. The 16mm plugs showed up today, coils slide right on. Bent up the rack and the coils are 17mm too tall. Ordered new coils. There’s something to be said for leaving it stock.

At least I can send the valve cover off for paint now.

Started digging into the passenger floorpan rust repair. The inside frame rail ended up looking really great. It still had the original coating on the vast majority. Nice surprise compared to the driver’s side which looked like the surface of the moon.

The car is going to in for the bumper conversion bodywork at some point, so I'll have to add this to the list.

If only I had the time, money and ability to weld and paint myself.

This weekend I worked some long hours in the diamond quilt mines.  Rear door cards are done, fronts to follow eventually.

First I straightened out the warped cards. Spray with water, wait, spray some more, wait again, then squish/clamp them into the shape you want.

They dried overnight and are good for another 50 years. I gave them a bunch of polyurethane to help protect them from future moisture.

Then I started into the diamond quilting. The first one took awhile, but I was getting better on the second.

Sewing one panel took more than half of Cliffhanger.  Then I moved on to the top cap and Edge of Tomorrow.

Even though it was extra work, the seam at the top gave me a convenient transition away from the sew foam. I don’t think the chrome clamp strip would handle the extra thickness, so beyond the seam is vinyl only.

The sewing took me three days, but mounting them up went quick.

Patch approves. I’m really happy with the end result. This will be a great match with my custom carpet install and recovered Recaros. I can’t wait to see it all come together.
