The 3 prong plug on the back of the alt. Blue wire is exciter wire and I  needed a diode there.

I was right the first time, that is the wire I was thinking of- PO just ran a new wire directly from the alternator the dash, so I might be missing the diode in the loop, which is why sometimes the car keeps running...

Stock does not have a diode here. I am not sure that the stock carb setup would ever have this issue either? Or maybe it’s the internally regulated alternator that actually causes it? Normally there is an external regulator in the mix here. Do you have stock alt with external regulator?

Oh yeah I just googled and and indeed it does appear to be a side effect of the internally regulated alt. When converting you need to add that diode.

I used an RL201 (50v2A)

Speaking of externally regulated alternators, I picked up the new brushes, bearings and diode trio from the repair shop.  He charged me $20 for the 'kit', which includes Chinese and Taiwanese bearings.  I'm not sure whether I'll install them, or leave the original ones in it.  It had a "remanufactured" sticker on it when I bought the car, so they are not 45 years old.

The spare is working just fine, so I'm resisting the temptation to take the original apart right now.  The only thing I don't like about the spare is that there is a chip out of the flange at the back of the housing, but it's hidden behind the Jeep fuel filter.

Stock s14 / e30m3 alternator.  But I'm also still resolving a cluster fuck of wiring, and I'm trying to not get ahead of myself.  Once I get the e30 HVAC out of the car and stock '02 parts in, then I'll start to really worry about it.  Besides, it's kinda' funny to turn the car off, have it continue to run, then turn the blower motor fan on, and that turns the car off...  Wife just shakes her head.  :)

Cool. So 2002 cluster with e30 alt? That requires you to add your own diode. If e30 cluster then i think it has one built into the cluster if im remembering correctly. They have been known to fail too…

My new washer pump arrived and I realized I must have ordered the wrong one as the bracket was different. So I cleaned up the old bracket and swapped it onto the new pump because im too impatient to wait another week.

Now I just have to figure out how to unclog the jets… they clearly have not been used in a long, long time. My old pump was all rust.

Thin wire, perhaps safety wire.

Technically not today... but I just got back from a superb road trip.

Towed my British 2002 up from Munich Germany, through the channel tunnel and back home to do a track day at Goodwood!

Finished up a project I had sketched in my head for some time and put her in her first car show. Kooglewerks long console for double DIN, VDO gauges (still need to finish wiring them), commissioned local audio company to build a false floor housing a hidden 10” down firing sub, all Hertz equipment including 6 1/2” components, amp and crossovers flush mounted into box. Really happy with how it turned out.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
