That’s the end that you screw into the speedo itself, yes.  Big collar helps you get it to turn.  Always fun working blind, but really not very difficult. Be careful not to cross-thread.

Many people do it to fix a lack of dash turn signal indicator or "jumping" gauges when the turn signal is on. See post a few above and you'll see his extra ground.

Found the same exact one in my car when I pulled the gauges. The nut fit perfect on a 2 5/8 VDO gauge mounting bracket. Maybe PO left it there for next owner, you, just to mess with your head 😅. I tend to leave notes/treasure in cars and house remodels for the next keeper to find because I love finding them myself.

A couple weeks ago I fount this knurled nut on he passenger side floor mat.  Haven't pulled the gauge cluster to see if I'm missing anything. It's much too small to be one of the the two mounting nuts.

I found about $20 worth of quarters when I removed the dashboard about a year ago.  I kept them in the little cubby on the left side of the instrument cluster (for the Kansas Turnpike), and they all slid between the dashboard pieces.  What's in the picture are just the quarters that didn't fit in my pocket...

Well, I don't know a lot about this 1968 1600-2, but I really don't think this small knurled nut is part of the speedometer attachment.  It is much smaller than the speedo and large threaded area.  You can see the size differential here, and also the back of the speedo.  The large collar nut threads onto the large threaded area of the speedo and the cable fits into the square hole perfectly.

I'd love to definitively know what this is for, but wonder if I ever will.

 

I, too, have found loose change in the old cars.  I have a sentimental attachment to it and keep it all in my tool box.  For good luck, I guess.  :)

It's most likely from a vdo aftermarket gauge.

Ha!  Was looking at the wrong photo.  That little nut is not native, IMHO.

Continuing to grind away at the suspension rehab when I can. Got the drop arm off the RF strut and the spring compressed to start getting the damper out. I think the damper may be the 50+ yr. old original? We’ll find out…

did you try refreshing the turn signal relay? After I did mine everything worked much better. There’s a post about it somewhere in here.

Last time I checked these weren’t too expensive, I’d replace them, if you have to reuse make sure the rubber is still ok and the bearing is smooth.
