Esty #5 carpet kit finally in as Polaris takes another big step to heading out on the road. Note new front speakers installed and Paddock dash oil temp brain box next to be mounted.

Tomorrow...center console, head unit, and rear speakers?  Hmmm.  That might be optimistic...?

Nice.   Warning! Be SOOO careful screwing down the center console to the tunnel.  If the screw grabs the thread in the carpet it will create a run.  Major piss off.  I like to burn a hole in the carpet to cauterize.   Pencil type soldering iron works lika charm.

Excellent advice Paul.  In fact I do recall that very irritation happening in another carpet kit I installed. Got the BBQ ligter and xacto knife out and carefully did this for all holes (hood release bolts, under dash trim screw points, etc).

The carpet is what Esty refers to as her "#5" which has a mix of dark blue, silver and black in it, which is hard to tell from those pix in that light.  It was great guidance from Esty as Polaris will stick with the Marine Blue interior it was OE'ed with.  I did a test fit with the black console last night and the whole "look" is fantastic.  That carpet took some effort to install correctly, but it was definitely worth the time invested.  This is a daily driver restoration, but still trying to make it look nice.

BTW, heading down to Harbor Freight tomorrow to replace my loaned and never returned soldering iron.  Paul's advice is golden for anyone working with a carpet install. If you try to pre-punch holes when installing the carpet, invariably they will not line up when it's glued down. Laying the carpet, then finding the hole location with a sharp pointy thing (dental tool, xacto knife, etc) then burning it open with a pencil soldering iron is the way to go.  If you don't cauterize those holes, and go to screw/unscrew something, the screw will wind up the thread and start pulling your new carpet apart.

I did use the ol' BBQ lighter to seal/cauterize any of the larger cuts, tho. ?

This is the most recent addition to my collection : p

I have recently been playing with plastic welding and find that a pencil type (flattened tip) 25 watter works great and that weed eater line makes excellent filler rod.

I prefer a hotter one for soldering, since I don't like waiting for things to heat up.  Maybe you can buy two of them at harbor fright... one for soldering and one for welding.  :)

'73 progress- ADD kicked in today. Instead of working on the floor pans I cleared out the trunk and cut the trunk floor and tail panel off. As you can see it didn't take long to achieve that goal.

With the floor, diff support, and the muffler out of the way I could get a better look at the project ahead of me. The loose plan is to remove the diff carrier support rail and clean up/repair the wheel housings to accept the replacement floor pan from the '69. My son was concerned about the non-standard spare tire well that is going into "his" car. I'll replace it with BMW steel someday, just not now.

I cut a piece from the diff carrier brace just to see what it looked like on the inside. I have a clean floor section to replace the iron oxide between the wheel wells as well. I'll need to sandblast the floor on either side of the back seat divider before I decide where to make the cuts.

@VWJake  Dude.  You're a monster.  I'm rebuilding all of the mechanical systems in my car; you're actually rebuilding your car.  Strong work bud.

I have a habit of reviving things that need the most attention. It’s a character flaw of mine. ?
