What did you do to your 2002 today !

Recommended Posts

After thirty years two weeks and one day today my car drove proper on a road again.
Did some adjustments to the swaybars and shocks - was a tad too tailhappy - now it's more controlled - I already have figured out that I am more a CR6ZZ instead of a CN36 type of driver. The rear shocks (Bilstein USD group 2 with rosejoints) are a bit annoying on b-roads - but I think I can live with them. Fronts are Spax - had to open only 3 clicks from closed to match springs. Next step in handling improvements would be different tires.

Still have some major Carburetor trouble a dumb oil leak and some other stuff to address - but it feels pretty strong and handles well.  Brakes are a bit spongy - bedding in should be done by now - will see if I change to a custom made balance bar setup I've always dreamt of manufacturing.
If I am lucky the 36 Venturis will arrive tomorrow - fabbed a pulling tool IMG_5161_k.JPG

And if you'd like to find where your car exactly leaks use some baby powder french chalk flour or whatever is in reach at the moment after an engine wash

after 1 Kilometer (in my case) you'll see where it comes from

Damn those english fidiots didn't seal their stuff

@Geoff Raynak...I removed the rubber and polished the SS on existing trim. I left the end caps on and trimmed those down.

Last time I posted I made these two dies on the milling machine at work, the first test result was pretty good.

But the radius got messed up a bit. I decided to try and sort it out with some hammer and more forming work.

After making a new panel, I got it welded in. Pretty happy with the result. If anyone ever needs to repair this section of their raintray... send me a PM.

Fixed the oil leak, changed engine and transmission oil after 120kms, will attack oil leak at diff tomorrow- perhaps I just overfilled or need to add a breather canister - looks like it's coming from around there - french chalk will tell. A soda (or beer - perhaps gösser) can would be my approach.

Installed Hi tech stuff (Datalogger for RPM, TP, and AFR) in the car.
Had some phone calls that were disencouraging regarding the lean spot at small throttle. Will ask on tuesday if VGS (Weber importer in germany) can add a 5th progression hole.  And try smaller venturis on tuesday when they arrive.

Major fail day and lesson learned. (A lesson I thought I learned, but guess not)

Grabbed my 'yard bag and was first on the scene to a 320i...

90% pulled the 5 speed trans... ran out of time and was without ONE tool... had to go, came back and someone got the 5 speed, so to whoever it was, you're welcome... and I hate you, and I hate myself even more.

Make some changes to my 'yard bag and set it aside, no more raiding it for tools!

Probably smoked from never having the oil changed and 300,000 miles, bad synchros, 3rd gear unuseable...

Five speeds are over-rated.

Saved yourself the price of a new clutch and aluminum flywheel- that's almost a grand right there!

Yeah man, that's the best I can do...  Better luck next time.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
