This is no good, right?

The passenger side window lifter was broken when we bought our '68 1600.  The PO had already purchased a replacement (used) lifter from another forum member but hadn't installed it yet.  Today I finally got around to digging into this project so my wife can roll her window down this year (rather, roll it back up).

The first step was to clean the thick, built-up, crusty old grease from the tracks and rollers.  People have said this was a lousy job and they were not wrong.  It is no picnic.  But it really is rewarding when it is all cleaned up.  The window dropped like a guillotine by the end.  Fortunately I still have all my fingers.

But when I was cleaning up the "new" lifter, I noticed that the retainer for the spring appears to be a few cranks from breaking - putting me right back where we started.  I realize this thing has lasted about 54 years, but this is ready to pop, right?  Or is this considered "still good for years of service"?

I see these are available new, but they are spendy...

Thanks for your insight!

Custom!

It might just be the lighting, but it looks like the front spring hat is deformed and needs the center section hammered back to flat, like the back one.  Otherwise, it can bind on the underside of the strut mount.

He’s correct, easy fix.

I see that issue on 15-20% of the ‘02’s which come into the shop; the most common symptom is steering wheel not returning to center, difficult steering, and ‘grind-y’ feel sometimes. Similar issue/symptoms when using the IE fixed camber plates, because the bottom-side hardware rubs on the hat. -KB

I think if it was mine I would get someone to weld that on just to be safe.

I think that pin is white metal, or pot metal, which will not weld well.  I wouldn't ditch the whole mechanism though, I think @Mike Self has done an article about making a new pin out of a bolt and he'll send you a copy via email, if you ask nicely.  :)

Definitely dissimilar metals.  I don't think welding is an option.  Will hope to receive a schematic solution from @Mike Self to make a new retainer piece.  I think DeQ on the other forum did a repair like that as well.  Will check there.  The issue, as always, is trading the time to make this new piece for the money to buy a new lifter assembly.  I don't want to drop a few bills on a new part, but time is precious, too.  🤔

moved on the e24 center console that sits over the tunnel…

only way to get the cover on the armrest is vacuum bagging the foam. without any silk wrap, i wrapped it in some leftover 3m window masking. didnt seem to make noise once covered, but ocd had me fishing it out anyway (in many pieces) after putting on the cover. pita, so better to get the silk plastic and leave it in.

plugged seat belt holes in base unit and enlarged the ash tray cavity in the foam to accept a 4runner dash dual cup holder that i wrapped in a plywood box.

covering base is easy, requiring only spray glue on metal frame attachment points. adding a thick batting on top helps avoid ghost pattern of the seat belt holes. 3/16” rivets for the hinge and the pair are ready to be mounted to the back panel unit.

Replaced my aftermarket fuel filter and my wideband 02 sensor on my EFI-converted car.

My 02 sensor went south after four-plus years of use, but I think it's been intermittently bad for awhile, causing some weird intermittent running problems -- mainly high rpm hesitations, and oddly extreme 02 sensor readings.

The car immediately perked up with the new 02 sensor. There's nothing quite like the sound of the ITBs as the car hits 4-7k rpms.

Pulled an all-nighter in the garage, in an attempt to get my 02 road-ready for my "local" chapter's cars and coffee this weekend. Unfortunately had to turn around after just 20 miles into my 120 mile trip due to sidewall rubbing on the driver's side fender. Hoping some negative camber up front will solve the issue. I also suspect front passenger caliper is seizing (could feel heat coming off), so probably a good thing I decided to turn around anyway and not risk it.

Work this past week/weekend included:

  • Kooglewerks wide/low front air dam
  • Italian turn signals & Marchal 882 driving lights w/ kooglewerks bumper brackets
  • Euro bumper conversion (need to get fasteners for rear trim (jeez these are $$$), and fix front fitment)
  • New wheels & tires - 15x6.5" Hartge wheels with fresh 195/50/15 yoko advan flevas
  • Reinstall turbo radiator (leak repaired) with fresh coolant
  • Oil change, new plugs, and valve adjust (only swapped one shim)

Still todo list:

  • Front tire fitment (neg camber?)
  • finish bumper trim install/fitment
  • front brake caliper repair (and check pads!)
  • Figure out tach issue (suspect wiring)
  • Change rest of fluids (trans&diff)
  • Touchup paint/clean up from bumper conversion
  • and of course, drive a bunch now that the spring weather is here!

Pretty happy with how everything is coming together, but I'll miss the old diving boards+bottlecaps sleeper look. Still a few things to do, but a few steps closer to the Vintage!

Oh what a terrible - and literal - pain.  Hoping for quick healing.   Good luck Barney

Gorgeous!

Barney, you are a true artist... even with one arm!

Take care of your shoulder. I opted-out of the surgery and it took a good 18 months of taking it easy to feel normal again.
