Waiting for parts to arrive for the rear subframe, I got inspired to go ahead with the 245 conversion.  So... out with the old.

To me, it looks like someone held each one up to a grinder to take some material off of the bolt head, prior to installation.

 

It is a nice large photo and you can zoom in on it.

That was my second thought lol. I think I would replace them just to be safe but I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

Mindreader.  The clutch appears unmolested and very serviceable, and there doesn’t appear to be any contact between them. But the heads on kthese bolts are very shallow.  I have seen other examples that look similarly “shaved”, but am interested in others’ observations on that, and on the fact that the bolts that I ordered from BMW as replacements stand well proud of these.  Zouave will be sporting a Sach 320i clutch — not sure whether that matters to the height of the flywheel bolt heads. But interested in views.

Yeah someone took a grinder to them if you enlarge the picture you'll see some of the grinder marks run in directions that the clutch hitting them couldn't make. just for the record the circle cut into the head of the bolt is a old time marking for a single use bolt.

If everybody in the room is thinking the same thing, then someone is not thinking.

I highly recommend it.  Clear epoxy embedded with color flakes.  Five years ago I had it put over a 30 year old grease-stained concrete floor (suitably prepped, including some surface grinding) and it has performed like a champ.  Thousands of pounds resting on jack stands have not compromised it.   Easier on the knees, too.

And not so much today as over the last few days, have decided (with the rear subframe out) to get this car down to Euro level.  Blunt supplied the H&R sport springs, and taking advice of Faq’ers I decided to tether the fronts to the spring caps.  Soon as some dust caps arrive, the front goes back together.  Against the advice of the gurus at Bilstein tech support I am leaving my Bilstein heavy duties in place. BTS strenuously advise against this, saying that the HDs will be ruined in short order, but numerous posts on this forum attest to the contrary, so... I’m going with you guys.

People usually use wire.

I have hand-fitted it and it appears to offfer plenty of clearance.  That said, if when I put it all back together and it isn’t a clear winner I have the wire and the pliers.
