What did you do to your 2002 today !

Recommended Posts

I started to organize the chaos that is my garage. I believe I have everything now on hand to rebuild this 2002tii... where to begin!

I managed to get the carpets cleaned up and re padded last weekend so they can be installed this weekend when my upholsterer comes by to do the headliner. Then the interior can go in after. I pulled out some NOS blue BMW mats to check how they look against the Baikal paint.

As for the suspension... I got the plated, powder coated, painted, vapor blasted, etc. parts back. A mix of semi gloss black olive, black, or gray. Getting the car rolling again will really help. I have a mountain of wrapped stuff, Christmas has come early!

Since I took the day off I was finally able to swing by a shop in San Francisco - Pacific Fuel Injection. I got the injection bits dropped off for a full rebuild... 8-10 weeks out, he's a busy man. He was excited to see an early injection set up, pre dated his German repair/ spec manuals! It is coded as a "T" so 1970 on the tag which matches the stamping on the casings.

Last up, another package from Germany arrived:

A long weekend will follow this post.

The emergency roadside parts parts kit is unique.
That will give us all ideas as to making our own kits.

Hmmm...

Could those rims, Uli, be the extremely rare Campy 5 1/2” versions marketed (solely?) by Herbert Hahne?

Gorgeous!

Best regards,

Steve

Finally got to drive the car after winter projects of transmission seals, install rebuilt distributor and O2 sensor. I drove to our local cars and coffee and it ran well but very lean at highway cruise. 17 ish. Got home and rechecked and adjusted the timing, moves the cam in the tuna can just a mm nearer the setting hole and adjusted the idle AF mixture.

Cruise about 60

Can’t say enough good about having the O2 sensor. Best improvement for money that I wish I had done sooner.

You could buy a Schnitzer or a Bizzarrini 1900 to get them too

Washed out the inside of my fuel tank with Evaporust. All of the pin holes are in one general area. Wonder if that  is the low point in the tank as it sits in the car. Found a guy in Richmond who said he can fix it. Lifetime guarantee and I had to ask, who's lifetime? Pulled the transmission and driveshaft.....and spent a moment sitting under the car remembering the the hunt is just as much fun as the kill and that I am back to enjoying my project.

Slowly building a $20,000 $4000 car

If it "ran when parked" you wouldn't have parked it!

Took Fritz to Cars & Coffee this morning.

This afternoon, I tackled the passenger side lock and latch.  Cleaned up the latch, added new grommets, and re-keyed the lock cylinder to fit the ignition and driver's door key by filing the brass tumblers with the key in place.  Worked like a charm!

Ah, I see, Uli, there were many ways to buy the 5 1/2” version: all of them expensive no doubt! ?

I guess that’s why they are so rare today!

Best regards,

Steve

All I managed to do on fri night was replace a bout a 10” section of the drivers wheelhouse.

Next up up will be a similar repair to the right tub, several repairs to the fuel tank surround, then I’ll chop the floor in half and start fitting it all up with the new tire well from Jaymic. I’m not looking forward to repairing either of the tail panels I have on hand. That’s gonna be a real challenge. It’s my cross though as each time I try to order a new rear panel they are out of stock. Ah well.

Piped in an electric fuel pump. Runs through the (previously unused) rear defroster circuit (so that I have a manual cutoff). Inline inertial switch.

Also rewrapped/cleaned up the loom back there.
