Barn/garage Tii find

BLUNT

Recommended Posts

My buddy Darryl and I grabbed this 74Tii this afternoon from a gentleman that lives 4 blocks from Blunttech. Hes been telling me about it for years. Its an 80k mile car hes owned for 24+ years and its been sitting for 15 of those but hes kept it running with basic maintenance. Unfortunately its a color change. It was originally a Colorado car but he painted it this shade or red some 15 years ago. Its a nice paint job and the car fired right up and idled smoothly. First on the list is to flush all fluids and check all the rubber items. I think this can be made into a very nice drivers car. Still learning about it. It needs a thorough cleaning and quite a few detail touches but I can tell its got good bones. Perfect dash, Perfect recaros, rust free as far as I can tell but havent thoroughly inspected it yet....Just wish it were still colorado. We plan on doing whats needed to make it a solid driver and letting someone else enjoy the car. We both have too many

Nice looking tii! Glad it's in good hands. Shame about the color change--but it's strange to me that it was originally Colorado. I thought that the color was essentially replaced by Inka beginning with the 1973 model year, but I guess I was wrong.

Quite possible Im wrong. Ive just seen hints of orange in the engine bay and it appears Colorado. Could be Inka. Ill look more thoroughly. Im no Tii expert but now that I think about it I dont think Ive ever seen a Colorado square light car.  Someone here knows

Nice find, Steve...that must have been a very clean barn!  We expect to see it at Mid-America next year!

But I agree with Dave Hoovler--I don't think Colorado was offered in 1974--but I've seen stranger things with '02s.  Like a Nevada 72 tii, when Nevada was supposed to have been discontinued in 1971.  I'm convinced that BMW simply used up their supply of paint regardless of what the catalog said.  Do a little more digging, betcha it was Inka!

Wow, those roundel recaros look great.  What is that in the center console?

Thats a dried up mayonnaise jar of whatever shade of red they painted it. Yes those roundel recaros look like theyve never been sat it. Nicest Ive ever seen

Ha! That color looks just like mine - nice find Steve! There must have been a sale on that color red about 15 years ago when mine was repainted as well (sadly over fjord blue  ).

Only wish mine was a tii or at least had that nice interior ;)

Fabulous find!!!

Just send an email to BMW Archives with your VIN (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com). They'll give you the car's manufacturing date and the original color. No charge; generally takes 1 business day.

I don't have many '74 tii VINs to extrapolate from, but 2780455 is going to be an early-ish '74: the 2002 Club of Columbia VIN decoder says September to December 1973 for the manufacturing date. I'd guess the precise manufacturing date is December '73, or close thereto. As many others have said above, Colorado last appeared in the October 1972 global, all-models paint and upholstery brochure (essentially, the '73 brochure), and was gone from the September 1973 brochure (the first square taillight brochure). I would be pleasantly surprised, but not shocked, to see a factory Colorado produced in late '73 -- as others have also said above, it does appear that BMW ran off existing inventories of colors even after those colors were removed from the global brochure.

Congratulations!

Steve

My BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2780218 was manufactured on November 22nd, 1973 and delivered on November 26th, 1973.

Excellent team work! So 2780455 was certainly manufactured between November 22nd and December 11th; I'm going to stick with a December date!

Regards,

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
