Being older, I've followed F1 at least as long as these tradjedies.
It's a little unfair to single-out Colin Chapman of Lotus as the 'winning at all costs' villain in the piece, because they ALL were.. !! He may well have designed light, fragile cars, but as soon as he started winning with them, all the others followed suit.
You have to remember that these were Factory Teams who only built Road Cars to support their Racing efforts. Every Race was a Major financial burden.
IMHO, if anyone was the Villain, it was the Track Owners who had enjoyed Corporate Sponsorship for decades before the Teams received any. Yet, these Owners failed to improve their tracks.
Ferrari, Maseratti, Cooper, Lotus - ALL had their companies futures riding on these races - they HAD to win. Nobody ever accused Enzo Ferrari of being a Humanitarian !!
It wasn't until the Corporate Sponsorship of the mid-70s that these Teams were financially stable enough to start adding safety equipment to their cars.
The period covered in the documentary was still F1s Infancy Period, albeit one which had lasted for decades. Grand Prixs had been associated with Death since the '20s. Had it not been for the determination of the Owners AND the Drivers, the sport would never have achieved what it has today.
Cheers!
Still, some great footage
