Wallothnesch aftermarket fenders

Nope.

Don't do it unless you're prepared to spend a ton of time and money making them work. Also be prepared to save the turn signal parts of your originals to graft into the aftermarket ones. That part of the WN stamping is the worst.

While the cost of OEM sheet metal seems ridiculously high, doing the cost analysis between those and the amount you would spend to make the WN ones work justifies the cost.

Now having said that, any replacement panel will need some sort of work to fit correctly. Remember your car is over 40 years old, replacement panels are brand new stampings off god knows what kind of form, and things will be off.

Hmmm. Both W & N fenders bought for my Touring were ok. The bodyshop said they fiddled a little to mate them to the nose panel (also W & N) but the end result was good.

Maybe they are designed to fit Euro models and not US models...….?

Mine worked out ok. I had the bodyshop fit them. I'm not heading to Pebble Beach any time soon anyway. I actually bought them from Restoration Design, but they had W&N labels on them!

Hmm... Was this a necessary component of your “fender presentation”, Nick, or was it simply a gratuitous shot of your Bad Boy? ??

I’m not beneath a gratuitous photo, or two, or three... I’m just comparing notes... ?

Best regards,

Steve

The history of OEM replacement fenders is also filled with bad-fitting and/or poorly finished examples, from the 1970’s onward. Suppliers have varied. Quality has waxed and waned, and waxed and waned some more.

My opinion is simply that you’re more likely to get a reasonable fit with OEM fenders. There are no guarantees. We replaced both front fenders on the ‘76 for the recent Big Re-Paint. They were “orange label” NOS versions — so quite old, 1980’s or earlier, I’d guess — and they fit well. But the ‘76’s nosepiece and right front fender were replaced In 1978 after a... mishap, and I distinctly recall the body shop complaining about the fit of the new (OEM) right fender.

If I only had to replace a single fender — say from a... mishap — and was not re-painting the complete car, I would definitely insist on an OEM version, simply to reduce the chances of a bad-fitting panel. But if you’re repainting an entire car, and, thus, are going to be fussing with the fitment of hood, trunk lid, doors, everything, I think the OEM version’s reduced “variability” is less critical.

Regards,

Steve

02Les, I did not know that WN had nose panels other than the very bottom bit that is on their website currently for a price.  Was your piece, the entire nose piece or the just the front sheet metal?  I have a pair of WN front fenders as both of mine were mangled on the bottom.

We have some issues to deal with on the front nose panel from earlier repairs, but it is a proper 'nicht snorkel' item.  So we will repair it.

David,

I bought the entire nose panel from W & N around 2005/6, knowing the day would come. It was just about $500 shipped to my door. Ordered on a Monday (by phone) and on my front porch on Thursday......couldn't believe it. It took ten years or so to get around to fit it. When I opened it up at the body shop (2016) I found W & Ns parts list and price list inside. BIG difference in the prices then and now!

Don't know when W & N stopped supplying the entire nose piece, but it's been a while.

I bought a couple of the W&N fenders, seem sketchy, decided to reuse my originals, with some rust repair in the turn signal pocket. The W&N need some serious massage in that same turn signal area. I'd sell the unused W&N pieces for $100 plus the ride. Jerry
