Fun With Tii Electric Fuel Pumps

I'll add my personal experience.

 

In 2009, from Mesa, I got a rebuilt tii fuel pump.  I installed it ...... and it would not run.  I un-installed it and returned it to Mesa.  They hooked up their battery to it:  it would not run.  I got a refund.

 

I then did the Keith Kreeger upgrade to a 5-series fuel pump and have been 100% happy I did.

I recently had some success fixing leaky pumps.  I found the o-ring size above (32 x 37 x 2.5) to be too big.  The cases would not fit completely together even when screwed down hard and although they didn't leak, they won't pump unless flush as mentioned before.  I put in some 32 x 36 x 2 o-rings and they work perfectly - the 1/2 millimeter makes a difference.  Also don't torque down on the screws too much, they can cause the motor to bind or draw too much amperage.  Test then tighten in stages to avoid this.  Also, the channels on the mating surfaces are slightly different, the channel closest to the fuel inlet is a little more pointed than the one closest to the body helpful if you mix up the surfaces, the imprint is still visible.  I also lightly wet sanded the surfaces to clean them  Be creful disassembling the pump body, the 5 little roller pins will fall out when it comes apart.

The rebuilt fuel pump from Mesa Performance that I bought in 2003 (for $121) is still in my tii. It's not going to last forever so I'm following this thread with interest.

Have had the E28 fuel pumps in my Tii  & 3.0 CSi since 2012. Highly recommend them as a great alternative to the originals.

Interesting that PartsGeek.com is advertising BMW part # 16-14-1-179-232 (Bosch) as a replacement for the original tii fuel pump for $114.

Back in the 80/90s I went through 2 original style pumps.  Since then I've used the E28 pump without issue.  I'd say they are at least as good as the original if not better quality.  Haven't heard of a failure yet.

All,

I just completed the E28 upgrade to my 74 tii.  As I test fit it to reinstall, it looks like the input hose (now on the opposite side) comes dangerously close to the drive shaft exiting the differential.  Has anyone had the problem and should I be concerned?  Many seem to have doe this mod so I am guessing it is OK but it sure makes me nervous.  Any thoughts or experiences are welcome.

This past summer, the rebuilt tii fuel pump that I bought from Mesa in 2003 for $121 became very noisy and I was worried it was on it's last leg. The Mesa rebuilt tii fuel pumps are now $550 (if available).  I sourced a Bosch E28 fuel pump from FCP Euro for $95 (it's now $86) plus free shipping   https://www.fcpeuro.com/Parts/?keywords=bosch 16-14-1-179-232 and installed it with directions from Keith Kreeger's website https://www.my2002tii.com/tii-fuel-pump_how-to.htm

It's night and difference on how quiet the E28 fuel pump is compared to the original tii fuel pump.
