My son Ellis stopped over this afternoon and we changed out his original radiator in his 72 Golf for a new one, getting ready for summer.

Pull the gas tank for clean up and repainting. Luckily it was in near perfect condition.

Also removed choke cable from DCOE and installed choke block off plates.

Installed some federal 14" 595 summer ties.

Yesterday and this morning I spent a few hours in Zen Meditation sanding the 'hives' and 'bubbles' in the bad paint.  I am pleased to that so far, all of the rust has been above the metal.  The worst blemishes have been about 4 small areas with some shallow pitting.

Right now, doing problem areas before consulting with painter.  We will be taking off the old paint.  Will be replacing hood, trunk (both have oil canning) and front fenders.

After resolving my exhaust explosions issues, due to timing and possible ignition wires incorrectly bundled together (Thx FORUM!) I made custom wires using MSD 8.5 wires.  Car seems to run happier although that could just be speculation.  I've never been able to 'chirp' the rear tires in 3rd gear and now I can, so new carbs, wires, timing adjustment has put me closer to dialing this thing in.  Now I just have to tackle the erratic idling issue and I'll be closer to Nirvana...

Chamonix ‘73

After striking a 90mm setback reference line I removed the rotten/mangled remains of the inner fender to nose flanges and welded in the solid/sandblasted flanges that I harvested from a nose I will eventually reconstruct.

The salvaged pieces weren’t very large, but they were enough to address the missing/rotten flaps and the destroyed tops of the inner fenders.

There’s still some welding/grinding/hammer n dolly work but they are on and in the right spots.

After finishing this task up I’ll be replacing the top of the right frame rail and replacing the right wing sheet. Both fun jobs... lol I’m hoping to have a nose fitted back on the car in 2-3wks.

Thanks boys. Engine was built by Terry Sayther in Austin, TX. It's 9.5 compression, stock cam for better mid range and Weber 40's. Running a 123 distributor and Bosch red.

Runs like a champ.

Now that's a great reason for me to keep my set of bottle caps.  Love your clean engine bay and trunk.  Nice work

So it’s been about a week and a half which is the time I spent mostly working on the nose but I think I’ve accomplished enough to be satisfied with the progress.  The reason I worked on the nose was because I noticed that the radiator was sitting proud on the passenger side by almost an inch.  A little work on the D/S light bucket bracket and that tranfered to the radiator mounting area.  Don’t ask me how this was the case but I managed to re-allign the radiator.

So I’ve been working on the nose and window edges.  I’m gonna remove the rear vent windows so I can complete the ass breaking work of sanding, prep. & priming all while not having taken the engine out yet.....

I want this gutter to NEVER rust again!!  (Not that it was rusted before but...I). I’ve scoped out some of the other FAQ people’s rust after the trim was removed and...... well, Its not gonna happen here.

I think this area is known as the plenum.... sanded and will be 2nd primered...

I went thru alot to make this curved wall look great.  And you’ll figure out why I POR’d the noses deck in the next photo. Remember,  it’s all about prep and color coordination.  I think this deck looks awesome!!!

5D8DE632-CCB2-430E-B11F-33C68603D771.jpeg

See how dark the Grille area is becoming?  I POR’d the deck, the hinge brackets, the face of the hinges and the interior back side of the nose. I Think I’ve accomplished the “dark grill look” as seen particularly on the Rt inside grille area.... Still have work to do on the actual nose but...... Damn!  That looks good!

AED0AFC9-05C4-4EB1-8ABE-DF41F6F588C8.jpeg

That wall and the whole nose will be painted in Still Water Blue Metalic Fjord...  Now that’s gonna look awesome! Still have to do some smoothing out of the noses top. Next....removing the doors, trunk lid and rear vent windows.

Mind you,  I’m doing this work alone, dumb and blind.  All I have are books and photo’s I’ve collected.  If anyone feels they’d like to contribute some expertise I’m more than welcome to any help.  If not,  I’ll just have to keep pluggin away doing the best I can my way....

I have no experience in body work, but it appears to his newb that you know what you're doing. Keep it up!

Forgot to post over the weekend, but pops helped me deal with this
