The cross out means your car was either made on a Friday or a Monday....If it was manufactured on a  Friday the dude was in a hurry to leave work and start the weekend, he stamped the car in a haste, looked down and said ohhhhh sh&t, then put then stamped it correctly.  If it manufactured on  a Monday car, well, the car was stamped after a long weekend of drinking, the guy reported to work while still a bit tipsy, made the stamp, looked down and said, ohhhh sh&t crossed the bad stamp out, then made the correct stamp.........Moral to the story DO NOT buy a car that has been manufactured on a Monday or Friday......This is based on my personal experience yours may vary ?

There was a great kerfuffle on BaT over a Ferrari Dino with an oddly welded VIN plate so good to record the provenance of this vehicle.

I'll take that worthless Dino...

I agree, document your 'strike- through' vins here!

And report what BMW sends back, too...

I’ve placed an inquiry into BMW archives for both VINs and will post as soon as I hear back...

BMWs were identified on the production line by a four digit build code which told workers if it was a manual, auto, euro, US, pre-71, etc.  If you look up a part utilized on many 2002s and search the part number, in this case a center track rod, you will see the many build codes.  I don't know about the 2002, but on an e9 a piece of paper with this code was glued to the trunk panel behind the passenger seat.

I’ve never seen a similar paper slip on an ‘02, Chris.

The four-digit codes even appeared on the window stickers, beginning on or before the start of the 1972 model year.

Here are samples of a Code No. 2583, a U.S.-spec Modell 71 2002tii, and a Code No. 2552, a U.S.-spec Modell 71 2002, manual transmission. Both cars are U.S. 1972 models.

Best regards,

Steve

Update:

Andreas,

Can you please provide me with any information on my 1973 2002 Vin #2588512?  Also Vin #2588521, as that Vin# was crossed out at the factory (see picture provided). Thank you!

Response:

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 2002 US VIN 2588512 was manufactured on February 9th, 1973 and delivered on February 20th, 1973 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Riviera, paint code 036.

The number on the chassis looks indeed like it has been crossed out at the factory, especially since the numbers on the manufacturer's plate and the engine look original too.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Andreas Harz

My reply:

Thank you Andreas!
Do you happen to know if VIN#2588521 was ever reissued to another vehicle at the factory?

I will keep you updated as soon as possible.....

Thank you for your reply.

The VIN 2588521 was issued to another BMW 2002 US, painted in Riviera and delivered to Hoffman too.

I've seen crossed-out VINs before, mostly done later by the vehicle's owners but a few obviously original and done at the factory. It's certainly rare but happened even in the 1980's sometimes. The numbers were stamped by hand so if the person doing this is still a bit asleep for example, it can happen.

Yours sincerely,

Andreas Harz

Great thread!

Thanks for following up, repoman!

That’s curious that both cars were Riviera. I wonder if that contributed to the error. Andreas doesn’t offer up the manufacturing date on VIN 2588521, but I certainly suspect it could have been built the same day.

Thanks and best regards,

Steve

I've done a search on the discussion board for "2588521", however, only this thread pops up.  I wish the bmw2002registry was still up and running.  Would be interesting to see if that VIN# is still around or if the owner is on the faq.......
