  1. I was searching the site for information on 74 tii steering wheels and came across this thread. Per @Conserv's request, I have a 74tii, VIN 2781801, manufactured on May 9, 1974. What I believe is the original wheel was replaced by a previous owner and came with the car with my purchase. The wheel itself is in rough shape but as the pictures below show is of the padded plastic variety (similar to the one I recall on my 76 02) not the faux-leather and carries a 5/74 date consistent with the manufacturing date.
  2. Every state seems to define vehicles differently. PA law defines an "antique motor vehicle" as a "motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year which has been maintained in or restored to a condition which is substantially in conformance with manufacturer specifications." A "classic motor vehicle" is defined similarly but must be manufactured at least 15 years prior to the current year. There is also a definition for "collectible motor vehicle" which is a motor vehicle substantially modified from the manufacturer's original specifications and appearance and maintained in collectible condition. Classic and collectible vehicles are subject to annual safety inspection, antique vehicles are not. None are subject to emissions inspection. Just switched over to antique plates and registration on my 73 Bavaria. The inspection on my 74 tii, which just turned 48 yesterday, is not up until November but will switch that over to antique as well come this fall. Cheers.
  3. Thanks @Conserv, appreciate the good advice. I actually just reached out to the shop here in Harrisburg that put new pads in the seats back in 1998. I am going to stop by at some point, see if they can save the leather. As you might imagine, the drivers side seat is in the roughest shape (photos below) but I would rather preserve the original leather with some patina than new leather covers if at all possible.
  4. Thanks @Conserv for the mention. The story of my car as told to me by the second owner of 32 years was that HA Boyd, the long-time GM of Manheim BMW, had a customer, a G-man who worked out at Ft. Indiantown Gap, who would buy a new car every couple of years. Boyd is said to have specially ordered the tii loaded with everything -- Schwarz, sunroof, AC, leather seats, passenger side mirror, wooden shift knob -- and went to Germany to pick it up as Boyd's wife had family there. My mechanic, Jack Miller, who owns Jack's Auto & Aero in Bainbridge, PA and knew Boyd personally, confirms the family history. I have attached the original bill of lading that shows delivery to Boyd as well as an appraisal letter from Boyd himself in 1983 that references the leather seats. I was told recently by an upholster that @bavariaboy connected me to that it was unlikely I'd be able to save the leather which is disappointing if true. If that's the case, I am going the route Steve suggests with new leather and the BMW gummihaar seat pads to recreate the original leather interior.
  5. My 74tii was manufactured on May 9, 1974 (48th birthday is Monday and gifts are welcomed!). I believe the airbox is original to the car as I have receipts going back to 1976 and see nothing in my files to suggest it was replaced. It has an indentation in the snorkel and the strap clips appear to have been painted black though they now show the ravages of time.
  6. Just had a new set of Pirellis put on this morning, 185/70, and then drove around about 100 miles. Much nicer ride. Get what you pay for with a cheap tire.
  7. My 74tii came with the original factory leather seats. Getting them recovered and put back in the car is on the top of my "to do" list. For the few maybe looking for leather, World Upholstery has replacement kits, GAHH does not.
  8. I don’t know Steve, he makes a pretty compelling case to redo the entire interior and address that slight tear in the process!
  9. Called Lucas Classic Tires to order a set of Pirelli CN36's. Having them put on my 74tii the end of next week. Didn't realize until late last fall that the current set dates back to January 2008. Yikes!
  10. @coloincaalpine RIP 2021, that is an absolutely beautiful car, a real stunner. Looks like schwarz, my favorite color. Would love to see more pics.
  11. Really nice work so far. Hope everything goes as planned though you may want to change your blog title to "better than factory" the way things are looking!

It is beautiful. Schwarz? I have a 74tii in Schwarz. Where in ME? I have a good friend in Brunswick, hoping to drive the tii up there someday.
  13. What other colors do you have? Black?
  14. Fabulous article! It has been a long time since I laughed that hard. Thanks for posting it.
  15. My tii is in need of new tires, 185 70R13. 13" options are definitely limited as has been said. I made the mistake of musing aloud about a set of Kumhos but was quickly set straight on the error in my thinking. Unless a set of Vredestein Sprint Classics suddenly appear, the Pirellis are going to be the way to go.
  16. Nice cars gentlemen. My 74 tii has spent its entire life in PA, a lot more years in PA than I have to be sure. I am hoping this will be the year I can make a side trip down from Erie to visit Zenwrench, perhaps the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in July. Also looking forward to doing Oktoberfest again in Asbury with Steve and his crew. Cheers, Charles
  17. Steve, here is the post, but I likely read it wrong as they do not appear for sale:
  18. There were some for sale here not too long ago. Did you search items for sale?
  19. A tii owner, I have really grown to appreciate and admire the simplicity and beauty of the 1600. If I wasn't saving to put a ring on a certain finger, I would definitely be in the bidding for this amazing vehicle!
  20. I need new tires and was hoping Vredestein Sprint Classics in this size might be in stock sometime soon. No such luck yet. Going with the Kumhos if they are not available by next month.
  21. Absolutely beautiful! It is sure to look even more amazing when you have it all back together. Good luck the rest of the way, look forward to more pictures. Cheers, Charles
  22. Really incredible job, impressive work. Well done!
  23. Nose has been replaced, seams not filled, snorkel, same as was done with my tii 30 years ago. Love the alloys. Agree it looked better with the original bumpers.
  24. Great story, glad you got your Franzi back. As a wise man once told me, don’t look back you’re not going that way. Forward and enjoy! Cheers, Charles
  25. I bought a cover from Covercraft about this time last year when I bought my 74tii. Could have paid less elsewhere but wanted a quality cover. I have been very pleased with my purchase.
