But also bear in mind…

See below from the Owner’s handbook. Is that weight limit about static or dynamic use of the vehicle? Or both? Either way, I wouldn’t recommend sleeping in the pop-up while the car is in motion… ?

Best regards,

Steve

Thanks for posting the specifications, Steve.  Coincidentally, the load limit on Thule racks is also 165 lbs.  I once made a run for some FREE 2x6 framing lumber and put 24 x 10 footers on that rack.  When I got home I weighed a couple of them and did the math, only to learn that I'd more than doubled the weight limit!  (I won't do that again).  Having put the roof/rack to the test, I would not hesitate to sleep up there; but I don't know why I would want to.

There is a roof-top folding tent for sale on Amazon (for $1200) that looks a lot like the one in the original post.  It folds into a bulky box that stays on the roof and weighs 125 lbs empty.  Add the weight of a body or two and you'd surpass my load of lumber.  I'm sure that tent was just put up there for the photo.  What a poser!!  :D

This tent folds/sets up in about two minutes and weighs next to nothing.  It also packs up really small.  The tricky part is coming up with a floor and having that fold up and fit in the trunk.  I'll bet I could attach a folding aluminum cot to my rack and set the tent up around it;  but climbing into the tent is another challenge.  At least my (beautiful) big bumpers provide the first step, as well as a sturdy attachment for the base of a ladder.

I like the color combination of the tent with the mint.  The rain fly is a pretty light blue, but adding that is more than I want to do for the fun of a photo or two.  Maybe I'll throw it back up there today and take another photo in the sunshine.

Here's what's under the mock-up.  I need to find a cot with an aluminum frame.

I am going to set up this CABANA and see how it fits alongside the car.  I think that'd make more sense than sleeping up top.

The colors look like they'll go well with mint.  I see Colorado, Manila, Taiga, Polaris?
