Sorry to see that. I did something very similar in my Mk2 GTI in college: Parking lot on a hill, backed into a spot in front of a concrete post protecting a telephone pole, then thought I'd pull forward to straighten out a bit - except I was in reverse, not first. Bashed in the rear bumper, dented the hatch and cracked the pristine "Heckblende" reflector panel that had been on the car since new. Ugh.

My 68 had a perfect body, But while it sat in garage for 20 years stuff happens, Another car rolled into right rear and crushed right rear corner. I'm no body and paint guy but I wanted to get up and driving I decided to bang it out myself, While definately not professional it will do til I do a full re-spray. I think you could pull bumper and repair your damage, I think mine was worse cause it involved the tail light area

Don't sell yourself short--your work looks very good to me--minimal filler and a nice paint blend.

Been there. Done that. Boneheaded... Indeed. Only I accidentally backed into my own 02 with my Vanagon - doh! - which lead to a full restoration.

Also have seen some references to some inexpensive chrome shops in TJ too! (I think it was on Lords of the Car Hoards) awhile ago.

Another reason not to drink the water.....

Interesting.  I thought maybe its cheap to have my bumpers rechromed in TJ.  I asked Chito about it when they redid my headliner and he said about $300 a bumper at the bumper place. He would take me there when i was ready.  At that price though id rather put in a bit more and get a stainless bumper.

Note that the polished SS bumpers have a slightly different hue to the finish vs chrome. The stainless looks warmer vs chrome which has a slightly cooler color hue. When I did my SS bumpers, the shop had a car that was getting a re-chromed set of bumpers installed and we did a comparison test. Just something to keep in mind if you end up mixing and matching.

AFAIK, the center section of US bumpers without plate lights are the same as the NK sections with their lights in the trunk lid. So maybe that crowd has got one for you.

I have those, but only including the light holes and unfortunately thousands of miles away...

Anyone mod a backup camera into their 02 yet?

Not in a 2002 yet; but in several other cars with ah, poorer visibility.  For the 2002 without much center console space, I'd think the best bet would be one of the wireless ones that transmit the image to a small screen built into the rearview mirror.  Camera gets powered by the backup lights but you'd need to run something under the windshield gasket and/or headliner to get up to the mirror area.

Also: On the stainless bumper sets I’ve seen, the individual pieces do not necessarily match the individual OE parts. Sold as a set, the s/s bumpers fit; as individual pieces, they may not mix and match. -KB

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
