Transmission support mount with no place to go?

So as I was putting together my engine I noticed that the place where this transmission support bracket goes has no holes drilled in the block. The engine block i'm using is a 1974 as opposed to my original 1973 car which I pulled the bracket off from. I could not find any information anywhere regarding this problem so I thought id come to the forum. Seems weird the engine block I have would not have those holes.

The engine blocks vin has been ground off so I can not say whether its a tii or a base engine block. This engine I got is actually somewhat a combination of parts including high compression pistons and a 1984 head from a later model m10. The build of my engine from what i read only works this way using an early (2002) block with a late model head (e21).

Is the block out of a later car (e21)? they deleted those after the 02 production also not sure if automatics were drilled for them ether although I'd think they would be. Anyway look for the casting date on the block to narrow it down a bit.

According to the Haynes manual it is a transmission support bracket but I have not been able to find much information about it and whether or not it is very necessary. It sounds like it was probably on early blocks and then they removed them maybe in 1974 and up perhaps? Anyways my block casting looks like this, not sure the date on it.

Never had one of those on my ‘74, which still has the original block.  Transmission hasnt fallen out in past 14 years of ownership.  Throw it in neighbor’s pool?

What is that bracket used on?

The lower most bolt on the transmission bell housing to engine runs thru this bracket.

My 71 block/trans had it and when I built an engine from a 76, I used the bracket.  I also use it now on the S14/245 trans bolting.  The S14 block has the 2 threaded holes in the block for attaching the bracket.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

The casting date is within the oval frame below the number 1 and number 2 freeze plugs (on the right side of the engine) — it’s just not particularly clear in the photo above.

Below is the casting date on my ‘76’s block: March 26, 1976 (“26C76”).

Steve

Steve,

Blowing up the OP’s original pic on my iPhone, it looks like either “1J76” or “11J76” - either way, making it 1st Oct ‘76 or 11th Oct ‘76 I surmise ...
