So far I think the prices are reasonable. They are not in the crazy Porsche range and some American Iron prices these days. 

 

The thing I get envious about is the massive availability of new manufactured and bolt on resto-mod parts for the Mopars, Chevy's, Fords etc. I believe there is one company where they make or sell enough new parts to build over 95% of the 65 1/2-70's mustangs from scratch. ( I know it's because they made so darn many of them) 

 

But this is the price we pay of participating in a sort of a niche market I guess. 

Loose: Not tightly bound. Subject to motion.
Lose: What happens when you are spell check dependent.

Maybe I have it all wrong. Perhaps the 02 was undervalued from the very beginning. There was a lot of good engineering and metallurgy that went into it, something car companies only reserve for race motors, today. And,now this is finally being recognized. For a long while these cars were cheap, parts were abundant, the bone yards were full of them, the Porsche and Alfa people were missing out, and some of us got too spoiled. The "Good Times" are over. And. that's too bad. It was great while it lasted. But, there are way too many people taking maximum advantage, And, the values have been artificially driven up through speculation. This is not just limited to the 02.

I remember, back when I was a young buzzard in the 90's, watching 40's and 50's Jag XK 

prices go through the roof.  I was working on 60's cars, and watching others work on the Jags,

I realized that their price had gone above the cost to fabricate a 'new' one out of sheet metal

and mechanicals from the saloons.  In fact, I watched a REAL craftsman make a set of front

wings that were better in fit, finish and design in less than a month.  He earned a living wage

from it, and the 'fenders' were the least expensive option at the time.

 

I figured out, at that point, that the cars were 'overvalued'- if you can make it for less than

used ones are trading for, economics have gone out the window.  AND it's probably

unsustainable, as demand will dictate supply, some 'clever entepreneur' will get China to

start pooping out all the parts, and you'll be able to buy a 'new' one soon.

 

Meh.  The $300 2002s were seldom viable cars, and even if the shells were solid,

it was another $10k- 25k to make a decent- to- excellent car out of it.

I sorry you bought a car that is European, highly desired and has a motorsport pedigree. 

 

Last I checked, e21 values are still in the tank, yet they contain many of the modifications some people do to 2002s. 

 

Personally, I welcome these little German shit-boxes gain value as it helps me justify dumping thousands of dollars into them. Can you imagine if values were not going up?? there would be no 2002faq, there would be no parts produced, there would be no organized events. 2002s would just rust away.
