Hey all...

The high beams on our '02 don't work...

Are they supposed to click on & off by pulling on the lever..??..

Or is that just to flash them..??..

Thanks...

'74 & on.

pull back to flash, push forward for the high beams. If yours flash, but don't come on with the switch pushed forward, then join the queue?. It's logically a switch problem.

Seems to be a few folks, me included, with this problem recently.

Two types of high beam switches on 2002s:

Roundies:  pull towards you to flash high beams; move lever up for high beams, down for low.

Squarelights:  incorporates turn signals, pull towards you to flash high beams; push lever away from you for high beams, pull back to click stop for low.  Up and down for turn signals.

  • Did you check your high beam fuses?  Always the first thing to check on a 2002; they wear out as well as burn out.
  • On a squarelight, next check the relay, then check the common ground wire for your headlights--but if low beams work, the ground is probably OK.
  • Then check the lever itself; it can get gummed up with ancient grease and dirt, and (on a squarelight) since it doesn't carry 110 watts of high beams (only enough wattage to trigger the relay), dirt on the contacts can keep it from functioning.  You'll have to at least remove the steering column housing to clean the switch, and possible unplug and remove the switch itself to get it good and clean (use tuner cleaner).

Mine always worked until last week in which you would hear a click when engaging them. Now I don't hear the click and they don't come on. I was thinking probably

something in the stalk had a small toggle switch that broke and was getting ready to make a post before seeing this one.

Hank, if you have a squarelight there's a relay for the high beams--that's probably the click you can hear (with the engine off).  It's one of those relays in a row on the left inner fender well.  Is your high beam flasher also inop as well as turning on the high beams?  If so, while you hold the stalk in the flash position (or select high beams), try rapping each relay smartly with a screwdriver handle.  If the high beams then come on, you have a sticking relay that's a candidate for replacement.

  • 1 month later...

Was poking around under the steering column today. The high beam switch looked fine but there was a wire that appeared to be cut off...? (see pic)

Also, when I had the cover underneath the column off, the horn sounded a bunch of times when I was working the stalk.

I have no idea what I'm doing ?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
