Horns Horns Horns

Recommended Posts

A shout out to our statistical and rare parts detectives.  What's with the proliferation of different horns in the 02?  It seems they changed constantly.  I always thought my horns were common.  Turns out they are not.  I kick myself for throwing away a few of this style of horn many years ago.

Here's a picture a member sent me.  Thanks Brandon.

Here's a close up of my horn style:

They make a nice sound, pretty loud too. If you do that, see if you can make pairs of notes (they are often marked on the horns). That way it won’t sound weird.

The factory horn (1) on my '76 is a Bosch 12V, 335 Hz (LOW tone).  PN 03 201 43 026.

The companion horn is a Bosch 12V, 400 Hz (HIGH tone).  PN 03 201 43 027.

IMO...this pairing makes a great sound (very loud), and not wimpy like a Fiat 500.

Caution: Be sure to use a relay and feed the #30 terminal through a fuse directly to the + battery post.

Use a 10 AWG wire from the battery to the relay (#30 terminal) and 12 AWG wires from the #87 terminal(s) to each horn.

Use the original White/Violet wire from the ignition switch to the #86 terminal on the relay, and keep the brown wire on the #85 relay terminal (This goes to the horn button).

I found out the hard (and expensive) way!  Connecting 2 horns to the original green/yellow wire from the original Hella (round style) relay not only caused a very muted sound (big voltage drop to the horns), but also burned up the ignition switch....ouch!

The horn in the box with the small perforations is most likely from a VW (look on the back to see if there's a VW emblem).  The early '02s came with the "seashell" horns (pictured in the lower right corner of the same box)--one for a 1600, two for a 2002.  Dunno when they switched to the flat horns, but that's what my '73 has.

And IIRC the last 2002s only had a single horn--probably a cost cutting decision.

My personal horn augmentation:  a nice set of air horns--I figure the smaller the car, the louder the horns need to be.  Inexpensive at Harbor Freight...

i ditched the old stock horns and replaced with loud and inexpensive Hella Supertone horns.  way better.

and yes..horns should be on a separate relay.

I've had these in several cars.  Need to put some in my '02.

Dave.

'76, totally stock. Completely.

The horns in my '75 are stock and original as far as I can tell.  No rivets.   Realoem lists 9 different horns, so keep collecting them all!  :-)

I used to have a very large Hella horn from an old Opel Kaptain on my '69.  It was six volt, so when goosed with 12 volts it was really loud.  Regrettably it burned out when the horn relay stuck while the car was parked and I wasn't home--must have driven the neighbors crazy 'till the battery ran down!

1968 Euro 1600 original horn with Swiss air horns from the period... with a sound clip if it cooperates!

Love this! I put some Fiamm triple trumpets in my Speedster and will be doing the same on my '02.

It's all about being seen AND heard.

Love the horn sound!  It’s very vintage and European even if it reminds me of old Italians I love it.  My plan was to ditch the herbie luv bug horns in favor of the air horns if I can find the right sound and that’s pretty much what I’m looking for.
