A photo of the battery top would resolve voltage questions, 6 caps = 12V, 3 caps = 6V.

Also, I used to own a '68 Manila 1600 with a dark brown interior, I think it's the same interior color as yours.

Definitely email the VIN to BMW, they can provide the original paint color.

no bimmer, for now

Gents, the results came back from the BMW Group this morning. To wit:

The BMW 1600-2 VIN 1528625 was manufactured on June 13th, 1967 and delivered on June 20th, 1967 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Manila, paint code 004.

When I ask for another round of photos, I will request shots of the battery and alt/gen and coil.

I also see an alternator in the initial posting, Jerry, as Mike S. suggested.  This, in conjunction with the regulators (both 6V and 12V) that Mike noted, tilts strongly toward a 12V conversion.  As does the "unified cap" top to the battery -- a glimpse is seen in that initial posting.

Best regards,

Steve

The excellent condition of those "UPS Brown" door cards reminds me, yet again, of the higher quality of the early interior materials.  Cherish them!

I've seen a '68 2002 with what appeared to be an original UPS Brown interior, but nothing later than that (if I recall, it was an original Manila car, re-painted gold).  So I assume, until I see more evidence, that the UPS Brown was phased out of the interior color lineup in 1968.

Regards,

Steve

I promise to cherish the UPS brown interior, Conserv. The chrome on the passenger side doesn't look as pretty. I've attached a shot of the passenger door card.

Thanks, Jim! I'll keep the photos coming. Should get another round of them right before it gets picked up by the shipper. Thought (hoped) it was getting picked up today, but I did not get the call, so I'll check in again with them on Monday. I'd definitely be inclined to take it back to Manila. I do keep seeing these cars in a really cool pewter color and I kind of dig the Agave that was used for 2002s, as well. But I think when I go through the work of painting it, Manila would probably make the most sense. I'm really not too keen on the current paint job.

On a separate note, did you guys notes the "Save The Whales" emblem on the center console below the voltmeter? Actually, I think it says "Save The Whale." That's probably gonna stay put.

Ha! I have a T-shirt, bought at MadDogs, Hong Kong, in the '90s.....Save a Whale!, harpoon a Norwegian.

Went down like a lead balloon as I was working with Noggies at a shipyard in S. Korea.

It was worth a shot, Les!

Duly noted, Inca, that's two votes for Manila now.

Got an update from my friend who has been holding the car for me. It actually was picked up yesterday evening. She wasn't there for it, unfortunately, so no additional pics of anything. I didn't want to hound her this week because she had to put her dog down on Wednesday and probably had enough on her plate with that. But she rang me this evening and said the guy called her yesterday and then was running late, so she left the keys in the wheel arch before she left.

He told her he had a 100' rig, and she said he'd never get it up her block, so he ended up parking on a major street and walking over and driving the 1600 to the truck instead of picking it up at the house. I keep thinking she heard it wrong. Do people run 100' haulers in CA?

At any rate, it is finally on its way!

That's way cool!

Aluminum adhesive tape (from Lowe's et. al.) has been used by members here to replace the flaky silver cellophane on the door cards.

Have fun!

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P
Two running things. Two broken things.

Thanks for the tip for fixing that aluminum cellophane, Ray. Will definitely be doing that.

I have the sneaking suspicion that this 1600 is a ways away from paint time, but when that time comes, Manila will get serious consideration. I like the color quite a bit.

Hope to have an update on the car's ETA in the next couple of days. I'm thinking not until after the new year, though. The less of a rush, the cheaper it will be. I think it's in So. Cal. at this point.

I'll dig through the pics I have later to see if there's anything else worth posting.

Cheers from Chicago!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
