  1. i have an lc1 as well, been using for a few years. the reason a picked it was that it had a gauge that matched the stock gauges the best. purely an aesthetics choice on this one...
  2. i painted mine flat black with a high temp paint. the paint never set up then i read the can and it said it needed to be baked, so when my wife was away one day i baked them in the oven. paint turned out good, but i was in the dog house for a week.
  3. does the large yellow gear going into the odometer housing turn pretty easy? I always though of gutting mine and putting in electronics and if a small stepper motor could turn that gear it would keep the vintage odometer output. the problem with small steppers is they have minimal torque. seeing the two worm gear reductions there it wouldn't have to turn very fast.
  4. nice! having the right tools always makes a job nicer to do.
  5. could be just thicker oil from the cold temp. do you mean the rubber o ring on the filter? if so, grab a rubber glove and give the filter another quarter turn tighter.could be just thicker oil from the cold temp.
  6. do you have the brackets, hoses, and the box that goes at the firewall to go with the air cleaner assembly?
  7. for reference, here is what fine splines look like. might save someone some guessing and reading later on. took me a bit to figure out what i had and what i needed when i was doing this having never worked on one of these before. this all started as just fixing a few seals on the tranny while the engine was out.... then, its a bit slow into second, why not rebuild it... scope creep.... worked out though as I now have a low mileage, well shifting, 4 speed with no leaks! it did take 3 seals to get the back to finally seal up. another oops moment. these transmissions have two different rear seals which depends on if the shaft is fine or course splined. and of course i bough the parts for the old tranny and use them, the second seal, i didn't think about it and bough the same one and did it again, and the third seal i finally clued in.
  8. sounds like what happened to mine. probably when they were doing a rear seal on it. red locktite everywhere. i remember all these little bits going everywhere when it finally popped open, primarily the little ball bearings at the end of the shafts for the shift forks. recycled the case on the old one, but kept most of the internal bits. figured if the one in the car now ever needs a rebuild, the parts might be useful and without the case they don't take up much space in the garage.
  9. i took one apart with good intentions, the moment it gave, parts went everywhere! found a good used one for $100. watch out for the spines on the output (wouldn't want to rebuild one if that was already an issue). my old tranny had the course spines and they were showing wear. someone had loaded it up with red locktite to prevent further degradation (and it appeared to be working) but that really sucked for taking it apart. found a replacement with the fine splines.
  10. i have a sr441x in my car right now. pulled it from a 1988 735i at the wreckers. doesn't match up to the bracket, but it doesn't have a bracket on the 735i it came from (just the two bolts to the block by the flywheel). works great and weighs much less than the stock starter. cost me $27 so I can't complain.
  11. calgary area is marginally better, maybe 5C warmer. weatheroffice is calling for a chinook by end of the week, so that will turn everything into a muck pit, but atleast it will be warmer, ill definitely take muck pit over -30C!
  12. you mean this gift? seems like we can't even give it away....
  13. if you want easy fuel injection you probably want this: http://www.webcon.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=15299 i don't think anyone on the forum has tried one yet, but they look pretty slick. still a bunch of work though, need to add microsquirt or something similar with a HP fuel pump, o2 sensor, etc.
  14. haha, no one in particular really, i seem to recall its 30 degrees but could be wrong with that. i use to use it for timing before i bought a light with advance. (3000rpm timed to the dots rather than 1500rpm to the ball)
  15. What is the two dots on the flywheel set at?
  16. next thing you know you will have to top off you blinker fluid...
  17. after sitting for a few days my weber was always hard to start, went to an electric and give a few seconds to fill the bowl before turning it over and it starts right away. im running a carter 60504 mounted in the trunk right above the fuel tank fittings and wired into the stock fuel pump plug under the dash.
  18. Do you know which flanges are on it now? E36?
  19. Is the flange width the same as an e21 diff?
  20. i feel your pain, i just did the valve cover gasket on my n52, although not hard, it is time consuming.
  21. premium here, im running 9.5 to 1 pistons though. could do mid grade at my elevation, but its not that common. if i still had the stock pistons, it would be regular all the way (and was until i rebuilt it)
  22. Thanks! I've even fixed the hood, took forever to figure out why the hood wouldn't sit flush. Always drove me crazy the trim line didn't match up. I'm in the Calgary area.
  23. finally have the car reasonably sorted, so I actually put more mileage on this year then I have in the past few years! still not that much mileage as its not my DD. like others I did revisit my insurance though.
