I have only a few things to say in regards to the upgrade.

It will take time for us to all get used to the new format. It does look different than it did but those days are gone and it will only take a little time for us ALL to adapt. The old format was so poluted with crap you never knew if your computer would survive anothr visite. Besides, where ya gonna go, Bimmerforrums? Roadfly?

This is Steve's site and he runs this out of his own good will. It's not like he laughing all the way to the bank from the money the FAQ makes. Matter a fact, I hope the software upgrade was covered. I know his time wasn't.

Now we are all gonna be a bunch of little Fonzies, do our job of trying to figure this all out and be better off for it.

Steve, it's not you, it's the whole internets.  They're all going to light pastels and softie buttons because they look good on dinky screens.

By and large, I'll be fine, and I LOOOVVVVEEE not having to wait 30 seconds for things to uppy- date.

And once I figured out to click on General Forums and ignore the subcategories, things got better too.

Thanks for all the work you put into this site, and especially for keeping it going in the face of all us luddites!

I agree with both of the above. I like the subcatogories, they are usefull when looking for something specific.

As far as search goes, it does suck that typing in site:bmw2002faq.com search term doesnt work now that it has been drilled into me to do so, but hopefully it will work someday. In the meantime, if I type something in the searchbox and specify forums, I get posts from 10 years ago, so that's not so bad.

For me, the worst is the classifieds, I prefer it in a forum type format.

Gratitude to Steve for everything and I will be making a donation soon.

Well put John. I've resisted posting to this topic because I don't care if CD decides to leave because of the new format. I try to teach my daughters that there are 2 ways you can approach obstacles in life. One is to stand around and complain about it, the other is to keep a positive attitude and work towards a solution to get around it.

I appreciate Steve for his time and effort to keep this site going.

I'll also commend Steve and the gang for taking the huge step to build a new site that addressed a lot of the security issues and moved the site forward.  Yes, we will have to get used to a few things, but it seemed like a lot of what was good about the old site seemed to have changed a bit too.

I also think they're listening to our complaints, as there are quite a few of us that have been around for a while bitching.  Case in point, is today I logged on and oddly enough, the text of messages that was light gray and hard to read is now black and MUCH, MUCH easier to read.  I didn't change anything on this site or on my computer.  The white space also seems to have grown lightish gray borders on each side, which cuts back on the "glare" feeling.

So, thanks, whoever, whereever, that made some tweaks, it's working and is appreciated!

Actually, i have not had a chance to change anything since i do not get much of an explanation on where people see issues. Can you take a screen shot and let me know what you like and what you do not like. I have chosen a few things on purpose and i can explain them.

Google/Yahoo/Bing searches will fix themselves over time. It is unfortunate to loose that, but due to the way the previous site was hacked to gather to all all the things we wanted i had no way to doing proper redirects from old to new topics.

As for classifieds, give them a try, they are easier to see and sellers can remove posts once things are sold. They also force people to think when posting since all needed fields are provided.

Haven't been able to get the capture working, but maybe this will help explain it:

When I logged on a few days ago, the text was lighter gray like this section is today:

"Advanced Member"

On each side of the screen, I see a very light gray border about 1" wide.  It was also not visible in my earlier views.

And, around the Reply Box I now have a light blue border that I didn't have before.

No amount of tilting my laptop screen would change the lightness, and other sites like MyE28, BimmerForums, Yahoo, Craigslist, Linked In, etc came up looking the same as previously.

Does that help at all?

I don't know when I started with the FAQ. '00,'01? In the subsequent years I have been here almost every morning , first thing. I have seen many good folks come and go. To say that I am both mechanically and electronically challenged is the mildest form of understatement. That said, I've learned a great deal here and it was the FAQ that introduced me to everyone...and everything '02. CD, yours are always, must reads. I wish after 11,800+ posts you'd stick around. I give you top points for history, directness ;), and perhaps best, style! Happy Trails man. Hope you reconsider!

We launched the site on 02/02/02 :)

I too am struggling a bit with it but I understand why it had to be updated.  I just keep plugging along and figure out a little more each time I visit.  I hope we don't lose anyone over it!  This is my favorite forum by far!  I also belong to 318ti.org , e46fanatics ,and Xoutpost, they are all good, but just not the same as here.  So I will keep going and eventually I am sure I will figure it out.

Vince thanks for the description. The "Quoted" box was broken on day one. I think i fixed that in 2 days once i figured out where the problem was. As for the rest, that is strange, not much changed. The border on the left and right was always there. It's width is based on the size of your screen. The site is limited to certain width, and the rest is the grey textured border.

I think that your browser did not cache things right the first time, but now it did, so you are getting the full picture.

Steve, you know far more than I will ever learn about computers and technology.  Thanks for confirming that I did see something out of whack.  I agree that my browser probably didn't cache things right.  Little by little, you'll get all the problems fixed.  Thanks for keeping on it!

Steve: is there a setting on the site that controls how the back button works or is that a browser function? I am used to having the back arrow/button on the browser taking me to the same place on the original page that I started. The back arrow now seems to take me back to the top of the page.... not an overwhelming issue but an annoyance for sure...
