I'm just happy that the ad copy notes the clutch secondary cylinder was failing when the car went into storage. It's a good heads-up that the part will likely need replacing before the car is put back in service.

Per BMW Classic, model year 1969 2002s commence with 1662758, so as Steve says, it's definitely a '69, but a "first series" '69, with all the attributes of a "second series" '68--no headrests, smooth center steering wheel, frosted (paint) one piece wheel covers, no side reflectors, plastic caps on the trunk lid torsion bars etc.  Underneath is a long neck diff and U-joint axles, the engine room has brake fluid reservoirs mounted directly on the M/C and a separate clutch fluid reservoir.  All those changed at 1664760, when the "second series" '69s began production as of 1 January '69.

 

Actually under all the dirt and crap, it's in remarkably good shape structurally--there are a couple of shots of a very crowded trunk, but the wheel arches seem to be completely intact.  The front portion of both rockers are good, only the rear portion --that are actually part of the quarter panels--are perforated.  It must have sat somewhere that was leaky--both the leading edge of the hood and the trailing edge of the trunk lid--inn the center of both--are rusted through--that was dripping water--and it even ate through the hood roundel--never seen that before!  But the door bottoms are good, as are the front fenders and other typical non-structural rust spots.  

 

It's also remarkably original--still has a couple of Michelin XAS tires, some period (non halogen) Marchal headlights, late 60s Lucas rectangular driving lights, etc.  Other than the rear seat back the other seat panels appear to be in pretty good shape under all that dirt.  And entangled with the back seat appears to be the original carpet.  All that shows that the car really hasn't been molested--especially since it was parked 44 years ago.  

 

Hopefully someone who's knowledgeable about 02s and really wants an early one will tackle this car; I suspect that under all the dirt there's a nice restoration lurking.

Those views, Mike, of the rear seat area, including both the rear wheel wells and the mounting areas for the rear subframe, struck me as surprisingly better than the car’s topside suggested…
