Barnfind in my own garage: Bringing a '73 Tii back to life

Last week was an ice storm here in Austin. Crazy amount of trees and branches down, many people are still without power. Spent the weekend mostly moving fallen limbs and using the chain-saw. Still a weekend worth of work to do.

I squeeked in a bit of work on the fuel pump. Not installed yet.

Installed the pump to the bracket.

My fuel inlet doesn't seem to have a filter. It is a one way valve that seems to work.

New fuel line installed, not clamped yet.

Another shot. The vibration dampening mounts fit perfectly. I am missing one wavy washer.

I have to move it to high gear. 5 months left!

So, it's begun.

IMG_8902.thumb.jpeg.57c44f78029f4c7ed94e566d5d80b662.jpeg

Past couple of days:

  • Installed fuel pump + new hose + rubber grommets
  • Started paint removal engine compartment

First, the pump. I tighted the 3 10mm rubber mounts, added anti-sieze and installed. Would have been much easier to install the pump before I installed the rear suspension. Stretching the rubber grommet over the electrical junction was surprisingly challenging.

IMG_8898.thumb.jpeg.03a14e5e64d840e0ad95f53740cef929.jpeg

New fuel line.

IMG_8896.thumb.jpeg.e1370bc590edda0c9e7e94710414e0b3.jpeg

Fuel line and the $28 rubber grommets. Egads!

IMG_8897.thumb.jpeg.56e665d1285e297912a19c7e1176eb48.jpeg

And on to the paint. First, I received an awesome surface remover for my birthday.

IMG_8882.thumb.jpeg.6cddb40ba33974511698a581d0d99067.jpeg

IMG_8883.thumb.jpeg.c35c5e8ad5d9ed2069bbc7528c9e3eb8.jpeg

I tried it in the engine compartment but it's too large for the corners and edges so I didn't pursue it long. I wanted to try it out though! I'm looking forwad to using it on the exterior with more flat panels.

Using the strip disk and wire wheel I focused on the worst area, next to the exhaust manifold/under the windshield washer container. Some scale/pitting.

Strip pad mounted to a 4 1/2" angle grinder. Also a steel wire wheel on a drill. Doesn't take long to make progress.

IMG_8900.thumb.jpeg.0cd27a5ce5467f79d6b08b504089e4de.jpeg

A bit more work.

The cats in my head are definitely out of their cages.

You want to strip paint these things are the beast. they strip auto paint in seconds and just leaves shiney metal.

Those are exactly what I used for 80% of the work. A wire wheel on a drill for the rest. It really does make short work of it all! I think I saw that you recommended that brand at some point somewhere and I bought them. 👍

I would have liked to use the surface remover in the engine bay, but thats ok. Plenty of exterior to test it on 🙂

  • 3 weeks later...

I won't say I've been making the progress I want to be making. Spent an hour or so today and got a lot done in the engine bay. As many of you know its tedious work. The big stuff is easy but all the corners and edges ...

Question for you. I'm looking for replacement CV joints bolts. This is for the e21 3.91LSD.

Ordered a set of bolts but they are different than what I need. These would fit but the style is different.

The ones I want are on the right (the older bolts), the ones I were sent are on the left. Different head.

Anyone have a part number for my old ones? M10x55mm.

Onward and upward!

Belmetric is a cut above for sure, great website easy to navigate.  I have bought a lot of stuff from them over the years, always get what I ordered (if its wrong, its because I fouled it up not them).  I believe you can get those socket head bolts in the size you need in Grade 12.9 in black, which isn't quite like the originals but close enough I think (and better than gold zinc).

There is an entire sub-culture on FAQ dedicated to the fuel line clamps that look more like these.  I think there is a secret handshake, there may be a special app, don't know.

Thought I would let you in on it prior to you doing all the clamps when putting everything back together.

I am not part of that 'secret' society/group.....with that said, this is what was (is) on my Alpina race car, where there is a hose that needs clamping.  The Norma clamp  is what I would use (do use, like this, not the 'ratchety' ones you often see).  You can find them from most folks that deal classic Porsche, VW and MBZ parts, sold in virtually every size you need.  AASE sales (Porsche) carries a number of sizes but there are others.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
