Yikes -

I definitely want to pull apart the clutch to get a good look at the flywheel to understand what I have.

Jason

@JsnPpp, this might be a good option for you if indeed your flywheel is 215mm.  I would ask the seller to double check the size first to make sure it's 228mm.

Busy week at work and other projects, but managed a bit.

This round:

  • Remove carpet
  • Start receiving new parts (already!)

Seatbelts removed, bagged and labeled. Boy what a mess!

IMG_8514.thumb.jpeg.021480f273329aeea6dd4cb15ccc7232.jpeg

Removed brake cables and returned the nuts/washers. Reminds me that I want to buy the upgrade handbrake washer/bearing.

IMG_8515.thumb.jpeg.0366ebd6bb3f35deb21d352c808e981d.jpeg

Removed the insulation. Looks like something from Tutankhamun's tomb.

IMG_8517.thumb.jpeg.0b4b4e0bf60344bc866541ffecaa88c9.jpeg

Carpet needed heat gun, thanks for the tip @mccusername.

As it stands today, although the carpet is now in a box. The glued insulation behind the shock tower opening was brittle with the heat but I can glue it back.

IMG_8518.thumb.jpeg.1678988841f5ae70ae1d361fc0581a44.jpeg

This weekend can get more done. I'll have the interior clean, wires wrapped, and ideally start on the engine bay.

Some progress, I need to upload more photos. One of my more urgent questions to the field is flywheel identification and clutch condition.

Still hanging from the engine hoist.

IMG_8539.thumb.jpeg.d51d16e255ffc6568cb38317227cd4c1.jpeg

Removed bolts in criss-cross pattern. I held the flywheel using a large screwdriver propped against the housing bolt and the pressure plate.

IMG_8540.thumb.jpeg.9f36e058bd90aa04ddac7b94d104d697.jpeg

Pressure plate and clutch out. So, is this a 215mm or a 228mm? I'm assuming the measurement is the diameter to the outside of the mating surface.

IMG_8543.thumb.jpeg.55d1ec697db93a222a3b302f9520bdc1.jpeg

I tell you what, the clutch looks pretty good. It should only have 60k on it.

IMG_8544.thumb.jpeg.060046658973eca76198574134fe1df9.jpeg

IMG_8545.thumb.jpeg.ca8f421c12de432adc5a0fda833505db.jpeg

Certainly not bad.

IMG_8546.thumb.jpeg.3100c5a4d87a39e48193395cf393a1e4.jpeg

IMG_8547.thumb.jpeg.86cb62c116bad10e7402ed6ff01c7b02.jpeg

So, I may end up just replacing the clutch disk itself if I choose to keep the flywheel (if it is 215mm that is). It all looks like it's in good condition.

Welcome all thoughts! This is a "while you are in there" moment for sure.

More soon!

Jason

Unless you’re intent on having all the subcarpet area original, you might consider a layer of adhesive-backed closed cell foam (1/8-1/4”) all along the tunnel and the vibraty vertical bit below the front of the rear seat.  Nice noise dampening and comfort enhancement.  Hmmmm, how committed are you to that original carpet?😗

Based on the other link, it feels like it's a 215mm flywheel..

So now my big question is if I move back to a 228mm flywheel + clutch, plate, etc. Or I just replace the clutch disk on the 215mm.

Multiple opinions (myself included) feel that the 215mm is more than enough for the car, is slightly (assumed) lighter.

Probably move to a 228mm. If so, I will have an excellent 215mm flywheel and very usable clutch/pp, etc. for sale. 🙂

The sale of the 215 flywheel will mitigate some or all of the cost of the 228 flywheel, especially if you get a good deal (the one on Ebay ends in 13 hours).  For the clutch and pressure plate, if you keep checking ebay, the parts from an M20 engine are common and work great, and you can find them where someone bought it and never got a chance to replace the clutch before scrapping the car.  New and unused parts in old damaged boxes.  I bought a new LUK disc and PP for a 325i for $85.

Here is an example:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/255145335784

I went with the 215mm flywheel to lose 3 or 4 pounds and am very happy with it, would like to lose some more.  volvo pressure plate and I don't remember which disc

Yes, that was the original thought (way back 20 years ago) for the 215mm. I'm on the fence to bring it back to Tii spec or not...

Good call on a different clutch/pressure plate should I keep the 215mm.

On the flip side I'm not racing  or anything and trying to squeek out a bit more responsiveness prob isn't necessary.

I definitely want to add a bit of noise/heat insulation if I can. I do like the original carpet but need to review it after I've cleaned it. Going to soak it in woolite bath for some time and see if I can shake out any of the dirt. 🙂

  • 3 weeks later...

I seem to recall saying at the start of this "just a little bit each day" and It'll be done in no time. Well, it's been two weeks since my last post 🙂

Family, holidays, end of year work, home projects, wifes car brake work, etc. were a priority for the most part the second half of December.

However, we spent solid time over the last few days to close the gap a bit. All of it body/suspension work. Unfortunately I haven't yet touched the motor (which I had hoped to do) nor began prepping the engine bay.

I'm telling myself not late yet, the goal is on the road by Spring '23.

Oh, received a Tii 228mm flywheel (new to me), a NOS 228mm clutch + pressure plate. Already have a short list of new parts to order (not the last order by any means).

My order of operation:

  • Finish rebuilding and cleaning of the rear subframe along with attached parts.
  • Clean underside of tail end of car
  • Reinstall rear suspension
  • Install wheels and then place on the rolling dollys.
  • Put rolling dollys under the front of the car (somehow, without suspension).
  • Start work on engine bay + engine

Progress since last post:

  • Interior out, floor wiped down.
  • Rear subframe dissassimbled
  • Rear subframe degreased/cleaned
  • Wheel bearings replaced
  • Under body rear of car degreased (not done, on going)
  • Fuel pump removed
  • Tons of parts ordered/arrived - planning installation

Here we go!

New to me Tii flywheel, looks great.

IMG_8602.thumb.jpeg.fca9a6a125310fefe5859905639da158.jpeg

Placed the 215mm clutch disk on top for fun, obviously too small. Interesting to see it on top of each other. FYI - I'll have a 215mm flywheel, clutch and pressure plate for sale, just PM me if interested.

IMG_8601.thumb.jpeg.5d2111124dbabf77e9a4255e1f40f397.jpeg

Daughter and I started to reassemble the "insulation" on the center tunnel. It crumbled when I removed the carpet.

IMG_8603.thumb.jpeg.22c90a423ce9de9ba137b5169bf2a21c.jpeg

We used 3M 90 spray adhesive.

IMG_8604.thumb.jpeg.df05c5f7d5fa30bb3ad8cd8df2923df7.jpeg

It all came back pretty well. I'll still use some modern sound deadening too.

IMG_8605.thumb.jpeg.2a78deb61fdd35057c19cbec9e1f00e7.jpeg

Random shot of the dash.

IMG_8606.thumb.jpeg.d5198e4efb636a7d9c208631482f7774.jpeg

Random shot of the drivers side rear. Messy.

IMG_8607.thumb.jpeg.62b6a2ac72f91f3b5288de002d2ff525.jpeg

Removing the last of the carpet, passenger side.

IMG_8608.thumb.jpeg.1198ac41eb5d600a3f3f10f2dd27e630.jpeg

Heat gun. Just enough to soften the glue, not hot enough to melt anything.

IMG_8609.thumb.jpeg.c8fe9208fe182f79a7883ba1623afef6.jpeg

Random interior shot. Can see the tunnel insulation is in place. Also, the car had door speakers at one time. A shame but can't do anything about it now.

IMG_8610.thumb.jpeg.8dbeadbd5283b22d2645fa02b71aa5f8.jpeg

Right before interior cleaning. I forgot to take a photo of how it is now, I'll do that tomorrow.

IMG_8611.thumb.jpeg.5b015fd76d0ed8c8c7f138ad582208a3.jpeg

On to the rear subframe. Daughter helper did most of it.

IMG_8612.thumb.jpeg.2bb5fe1fec011bf8bb6d09e2a5457ef0.jpeg

Swaybar first. 17mm.

IMG_8613.thumb.jpeg.1eabf52f987e14e3b63f469e5099f532.jpeg

CV joint removal. Looked the axle with a 1/2 breaker bar. I believe one side is 10mm and the other is 8mm. Or possibly 8mm and 6mm.

IMG_8614.thumb.jpeg.5fea663c7e2620d00114ca1bed92746a.jpeg

So, in the name of full maintenance I wanted to change all wheel bearings. However, while I have many of my receipts but couldn't recall if I changed these in my ownship. I also didn't feel like going through the pile of receipts to check. Rear bearings had zero play but to be safe I decided to change them anyway.

Axle nut. Tons easier when its on the car. That ship has sailed and so had to resort to air impact. I used a 1/2inch breaker bar to hold in place. Took some time and heat.

IMG_8623.thumb.jpeg.6c6eca991ed0d4ec8d9dfceca2bcd4ca.jpeg

Pushed the stub axle out with a 2 arm puller.

IMG_8631.thumb.jpeg.5ef4b709952b9d3d084458e88bddf826.jpeg

IMG_8634.thumb.jpeg.c7ba336e4ddd05d414c273907767e64f.jpeg

Now, looking at this grease tells me I changed these out in the not so distant past. Prob 10 years ago. Ah well. new bearings going in.

IMG_8636.thumb.jpeg.aee1c0af49f76ac3da8403e0b8176853.jpeg

Slathered with grease.

IMG_8638.thumb.jpeg.1e7045c22b1d8c79bfc5aeacc56153aa.jpeg

Reinstalled. I wound up tapping it a hammer. I didn't like doing it, would have liked to use a press.

IMG_8637.thumb.jpeg.b54edee92e608f745e3b5736d03b40cf.jpeg

A shot of the underside pre removal of the fuel pump.

IMG_8654.thumb.jpeg.9aca7d33f51632d6e36759dd75f7cab3.jpeg

I have since learned that those soft foam inserts to protect the fuel line are $32 each! Damn.

IMG_8656.thumb.jpeg.0be6aeea336fc71f81c8fd2b1b4910a1.jpeg

Three 10mm bolts to remove the fuel pump. They came out easily, but I need to order new ones. Thankfully these are only $26 each. No joke.

The hose was really tough to get off. Wound up scoring it and tearing it off.

IMG_8660.thumb.jpeg.7a7ba5f24149541db138687aaa975c1e.jpeg

Started cleaning the underbody with a mixtgure of degreaser + simple green + water. Hard to tell but there is a clear line of dirt/paint in the wheel well.

IMG_8659.thumb.jpeg.d59629efcfe458e37a70981c73bfc1ce.jpeg

First pass of cleaning.

IMG_8655.thumb.jpeg.6c52ff45f4030c62bbd95c349804e15c.jpeg

We spent some time cleaning the old grease off the back end. Not done yet but it looks much better. I'll take more photos tomorrow.

Once I get the control arm bushings I can finish the suspension and reinstall...

More soon!
