Barnfind in my own garage: Bringing a '73 Tii back to life

Quick question for the field!

I ordered new wheel cylinders, only to find I was shipped something that doesn't look like what I have.

The new ones don't seem to fit my backing plate + the old ones visually look like stock 02 wheel cylinders, confirmed by Blunt pulling a new stock cylinder off the shelf.

SO - it feels like I have stock backing plate + stock 02 wheel cylinders. Can someone verify visually to ensure I'm not crazy? Would be a huge surprise to me if I have wrong backing plates + cylinders!

Ya got E21 cylinders.  Redesigned so as to not mix up (idiot proofed).

I think there is a the number cast into them (the diameter of the bore) is 2 mm more than the O2s but may be the same if a Tii

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

It does indeed look like the wrong part was in the box! Blunt and team are taking care of it - super customer service. Have RMA already.
Thanks everyone!

I've been working on gathering parts, not much time for actual car repair. Amazing how much time it all takes. Ordered the new fuel hose + brake wheel cylinders.

I snuck a bit of time tonight to clean the fuel pump. It's not done but it's a start.

Some light cleaner to start.

IMG_8794.thumb.jpeg.76177394ce3e1cd33707a8e55f4a414d.jpeg

Very old hose. Impressive.

IMG_8795.thumb.jpeg.954182d631c24873c7e5af178e0ff633.jpeg

The reservoir tank looks solid. I removed the valve and it appears to work - one way.

IMG_8796.thumb.jpeg.0de58d8c620e00ee0cd8be315a062bdf.jpeg

Light cleaner + 0000 steel wool really cleans it up.

IMG_8797.thumb.jpeg.8cfaa030705de3557491c7277c450b1f.jpeg

The new rubber mounts, the $4 version rather than the $20. Look perfect.

IMG_8798.thumb.jpeg.24bf824c0095b9f9b3e56e7d7e244fc5.jpeg

As it stands, I'll finish clean and reassembly tomorrow.

IMG_8799.thumb.jpeg.9a739a82abce8ed7c7e9c1440d622f2b.jpeg

I really need to start the engine bay.

Look into the inlet of the pump. It should have a screen that you can remove for cleaning.

Small updates during the work week. Started working the engine bay as well as gathering parts.

Work accomplished:

  • Dent removal
  • Parts gathering
  • Sanity checking

The first rabbit hole of the evening was the semi oval opening on the cowl, above the fan blower. It has been dented on the car for as long as I can remember.

IMG_8763.thumb.jpeg.e49eabf49d6a188cf84ad73eaefaff56.jpeg

I used the new seam pliers on it and took some of it out.

Pushing on below while tapping from above.

IMG_8811.thumb.jpeg.6d3dc70dce8e20bd08b6c31753830983.jpeg

I could still feel a dip where it had been dented.

IMG_8812.thumb.jpeg.ff26be18aafc780fc98ec230d2d773f5.jpeg

You can see it here. And a rise too. The far edge is the reference line I am looking at.

IMG_8813.thumb.jpeg.f0469070599407a361ed7d47a4ac48aa.jpeg

 Then a bit of hammer/dolly. It's slow work. Especially holding a camera/phone.

More tapping and bending. Without a camera helps.

IMG_8815.thumb.jpeg.f99f2a62d885138d269982fcfd573df2.jpeg

Closer but still a dip.

Better.

IMG_8822.thumb.jpeg.b1db8f462fda55bb0238de0d5311ba79.jpeg

Where I left it last night. It's good/better but I still feel some bumps and the edge is a bit rough. I'll keep poking at it over the next days.

IMG_8823.thumb.jpeg.327fb86b6e4b3624dc522e37c5a7af09.jpeg

Also spent some time on the nose. Crappy video where I obviously need to pay attention to where I am pointing the camera when I'm doing work. Or, put it on a stand.

Received new rear spring pads in the mail. Soooo much better than the old ones.

IMG_8821.thumb.jpeg.4d380e4d6346cbcfbb273685ef42290c.jpeg

Another question. I seem to be missing a small bracket on the passenger side. The top is spot welded 4 times.

Here is the drivers side:

IMG_8809.thumb.jpeg.18d7fd9c1e3895795b9305bd9bcf00fa.jpeg

Any thoughts? I need to dig into the boxes, perhaps the receiver/drier was attached there.

Today I received new wheel cylinders - tomorrow I finish the brakes and can "wrap" the rear axle area, replace the pump, fuel lines, etc.

I'm hesitating to go full bore into the engine compartment b/c it's going to be a rat hole time sink for me. But i need to start if I am going to drive this car in 2023.

Super helpful. Mine seems to have a small bar that crosses over the top, not sure how to remove. I'll post a photo + look at it more carefully. 👍

Lol! And some post-processing would help too!

Reminds me of an old VP of engineering I used to work with at a startup software company. "Do you want documentation or do you want software?" Documenting takes as much time as doing the work! But it's fun and helps motivate me.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
