The 02, Heading Towards "Collector - Garage Queen" Status.

Over the past 52 years of owning--and daily driving a brace of '02s (no road salt since 1984 and 1999 respectively, so unclench, y'all) I've always been concerned that some idiot (myself included) would pull a boneheaded stunt and wreck one (or both) my '02s beyond saving.  So far it hasn't happened, and that's after a combined 450,000 or so miles of driving 'em.

As we all know, the charm of a 2002 (besides the ownership camaraderie) is in driving it, especially on non-linear roads.  They're not rolling sculpture, like an XKE or a Duesenberg SSJ, or blow-your-socks-off performance like a Ferrari--just fun to drive.  That isn't accomplished by carefully covering it up in a climate-controlled garage and trailering it to concours.

So I'm gonna continue to risk automotive annihilation by driving my '02s--around town and to events several states away.  To terribly paraphrase Patrick Henry, "I know not what others may do, but as for me, gimme the open road  (in my '02) or give me a Camry."

Rant for today.

Slavs, why are you so concerned about how others are going to use their cars?

I think it is impacting the price of project cars and rare parts.  We can hope interest in fully restoring ‘02s shows up in some much needed repro parts becoming available (dash please).  But owners of $60k+ ‘02s that can’t even swap out their guibo much less change the oil are a new type of owner in our community.  This high end/price market for our cars will raise the value for current owners but unfortunately start locking out new folks from gaining  entry.  Driving mine to our local C&C today!  ?

I will admit that I probably cannot swap out the guibo on my 02, but I did and still do change my own oil. No one would mistake me for a mechanic though so I like to trust my tii those that know what they are doing. Be that as it may, I have never had more fun and pleasure than driving my 76 02 in my youth and my 74 tii today. Cheers!

Me too!   And that's why I don't mind the "diving boards" and big "square lights".

I've always keep my car in good condition to drive in all weather, day or night, and legally in California!

So far...no leaks, no rust, and no accidents in 145k miles.

Slav’s post brought back a lot of memories of my college days and the cars that the students used as daily drivers.  I was at UC Davis from 1969-1975 and at just one housing complex there was a MB 250SL which I always parked my 1600 next to so I wouldn’t get door dings.  There was also two Porsche 356s, a TriumphTR3, a MGTF, a Mini Cooper, a 1955 Chevy gasser and occasionally a 440 Dodge Charger.  Across the street in the Safeway parking lot was a 289 Shelby Cobra owned by one of the checkers.

Going back to school I can say that that spirit is very much still alive in the young of today, it’s the cars that have  changed.  Today’s cars are the Scion/Subaru BRZ, trashed Nissan 350z’s, and other mid 2000’s sports cars bottomed out on their depreciation curve.  The kids (especially stem majors) have just the same passion.

What has changed are the draconian smog laws by big brother and being ostracized by an increasing number of “activist” students.  Now these young college students risk their cars being impounded for just putting on different air filters and changing the exhaust... stuff that seems trivial to us working on 02’s.

I continue to drive my '74tii because it likes to be driven as much as I like to drive it.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
