Extra door seal improvisation.

Purists probably won't like my solution to leaky door seals but this is what I came up with this morning  I've added a few inches of extra foam toward the trailing edge of the door seal where I feel cold air entering the cabin.  Not going to win any beauty contests but it has helped to seal up my doors at bit.  Today I drove 170 miles down the interstate during heavy rain and wind and it was an improvement.  I did have one interesting moment when all 4 tires hydroplaned and floated off the pavement at around 60mph during a slight turn in Everett.  Thankfully, it resolved itself under control as I let off on the gas and brakes and I got grip back.  Good to be home and safe and sound however.

Looks good. I just replaced the b pillar window roached weatherstripping only and it makes a big difference. With the cost of good proper seals it makes sense to be creative. By the way, what tires are you running? Sounds like a scary moment.

Tires are about a year old and not worn out.

Where were you able to find just that strip--the one that (allegedly) seals the trailing edge of the door glass to the B pillar, vs the entire seal.  I've been hoping for many years that someone would repro just that one piece, as it's the only part of the door perimeter seal that actually goes bad.  

 

To try and make that seal tighter, I've glued some thin rubber tubing to the inside of the lip to push it outward.  It helps, but new material would be much better.

@Mike SelfHi Mike. I had read that the Ford Focus door weatherstrip is a usable alternative to the available real ones and bought one. I didn't like the interior overlap but cut pieces of it to replace the B pillar sections of the original. Contact cement. Works for now. Big improvement noise and draft wise and doesn't look bad to me at least. The top corner is a little squished. I did the tubing addition to my trunk seal. Not needed with this window seal.

Thanks for the tip...looks like it's time for a trip to the local U-Pick, followed by a little experimentation.

Throw them away.  Schwabby pushes them, and they are truly dangerous.

I've had 15 year old rocks with better grip.  They have pathetic lateral grip,

and just skate longitudinally.  

 

I too have replaced sections of weatherstrip-

even the (shudder) JC Whitless 'generic' stuff does

a pretty good job around the window, when the original

stuff degrades.  I think it's a FINE solution for a driver.

1+ with Toby on the Toyo “E-slips”. Worthless in the rain, mud, snow and dry pavement.  

For door seals I am for anything that works. 

Loose: Not tightly bound. Subject to motion.
Lose: What happens when you are spell check dependent.

 

1975 Malaga. It is rusty and  springs an occasional leak.  Just like me.
