Picture Request: Two-tone paint with Sahara and....?

Recommended Posts

I've got an incredibly tan '74 Bavaria that needs a little pep in its step visually.

Step 1-- adding ridiculous gold wheels-- was a success.

Now I'm converting from big bumpers to small/no bumpers so there are holes to patch up front. Rather than try to match the tan, I'm going to add a splash of color, fake rally-car style.

Does anyone have any pictures of a two-tone 2002/E3/E9 where one of the colors is Sahara? The Internet is silent on the subject.

If not, how about opinions on what colors might look good with Sahara? Starting with the period correct BMW palette but not limited to it.

Thanks,

Michael

Malaga below the beltline; Sahara above would look way cool...

@mccusername mine was Bristol/Granada!

the one you’re thinking of, it’s probably the Nevada/Malaga one.

Turf, Atlantik will prolly look great on your car!

@MOJOJOY Great pics, great cars. Thanks!

Like most I think, I've never seen a Turf car in person. I had a green/yellow plaid sample inside the car and it looked great so I am considering some greens.

The top/bottom split is obviously the most common for 2002s but all of the paintwork needed is forward of the front wheel wells, mostly below the belt line. So I'm also thinking of a front 'mask' in another color(s)  a la old rally cars.

Here’s Turf on a 1964 paint chart. It’s a strong dark color when applied to a full car. For whatever reason, there were lots of ‘67 1600-2’s in this color in southeast Pennsylvania in the late ‘60’s, early ‘70’s — I almost bought a thoroughly clapped out one ca. 1974...

Might be interesting with Sahara.

Best,

Steve

I‘d just paint the roof, not above the Beltline.
For colour: turf, black or dark chocolate brown - I‘m not a fan of brown but a friend had a 70ies Mercedes 250C in that combo - worked well.

Thanks for all the replies and input! This started as a lark but then I remembered I'm literally color-blind...

What about satin / flat black?

Definitely considering this, maybe with a strong accent color under the belt line. My wife and daughter say it looks cheap, which of course it does, because it was cheap back in the day.  Looks cool tho--

Also thinking about going for the same effect but with a very dark green on top instead of black...

Turf, Amazon, Jade or maybe tundra below the belt line.

Turf does look dark on the sample, but much lighter in pictures of cars I have seen.

We've talked about every other green but curious what people think about Agave and sahara together? Maybe Agave has a bit too much blue in it?

This is where the color blindness comes in. What IS Sahara? Does it have underlying greens, or more red?

Still interesting that no one has pics of a two-tone Sahara car. It's so neutral you figure people would have slapped other colors on it

The Mission Creep is always strong with this group! The circled area is the only place I have to paint, to cover old bumper holes and some rock chips etc

Anything more than that is not out of the question but... extra.

I'm considering doing the hood, trunk, and top of the doors a la Alpina, but even that involves a lot more prep than just the front.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
