Who's Been (Going to) Monterey?

Recommended Posts

Paul,

some personal nostalgia in your Oregon route:

 1)  Astoria.  99 years ago today (30 July) my dad was born in Astoria.

 2)  Grant's Pass.  86 years ago he was living near there (in Gold Hill).

 3)  Seaside on the coast, just south of Astoria.  101 years ago my grandparents were living there.

Cheers,

Carl

It is an incredible event and I will for sure be going back again this year for the entire week. It is more than just the rich and famous, which are easy to avoid, when you are down track side and in the pit area. The car shows, the car auctions the historic / vintage races and the friendly people are why you should go. Don't get yourselves caught up in the Top 1% who are definitely out in force. Enjoy it for what the event is not what others try to make it.

Everyone has to go at least once!!!

You will love it Paul. I road tripped there last year from Colorado and had a great time. I really just walked around taking in the sites. Went to town in the evenings for food and drink and enjoyed the street" show" there. The track and paddock area was more than enough for my 2 day visit and i did not make it to any other shows but you cannot go wrong with any event there. Talking with alot of strangers about a common love for classic cars and motorsport was a highlight.

It's not 2002 related but you have to go to the Monterey Aquarium.  Hope you have a great drive down, wish I could do it in a car some day.  I have been to 30 of the last 32 Monterey Historic races but I always have to take a trailer (anywhere from 36-53').

WBorn and raised here in Monterey County and living about 10-minutes from the track, things that I would do if I've never been here before.

Take a drive along Cannery Row and Asilomar Beach. Asilomar Beach will lead you to 17 Mile Drive, take a right onto 17 Mile Drive into Pebble Beach

After the 17 Mile Drive, head out of Pebble Beach, and take a drive along the ocean in Carmel.

After the drive through Carmel, jump onto Carmel Valley Road, and head out to "Baja Cantina" for a bite to eat. The guy that owns the restaurant is a car guy, VERY cool place, AWESOME food.

If you are looking for a COOL drive through the back roads of Monterey County, continue on Carmel Valley Road South, a 45 minute drive will bring just South of Soledad, you'll end up on Hwy 101. Head North on 101 to Salinas. Jump on Hwy 68 West, and it will bring you back to Laguna Seca.

If you are not interested in the long drive when you leave "Baja Cantina, go South on Carmel Valley Road, then left Laureles Grade Rd. Laureles Grade will bring you to Hwy 68, about 1/2 mile East of the entrance to Laguna Seca.

If you have any questions, give me a call

Salute'

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
