What did you do to your 2002 today !

Recommended Posts

Got the engine mostly reassembled. Head is on, peripheries are mostly on.
need:

-adjust valves

-install radiator, hoses, coolant

-install rest of minor stuff, air filter canister,  battery

-install ball joints.
-start it and send it!
If I can find the time this week, busy with work, I might just make SoCal Vintage!

Not sure when I posted here last exactly, but I believe since that time I've got my new transmission seals installed, but before finishing that job I'm continuing with underbody cleanup (including converting / paining a little surface rust), removed and repaired (replaced seals) the steering box, replaced a LF outer tie-rod end (discovered a small crack in the rubber boot), decided to go ahead and replace all the brake lines and hoses while I'm at it ... then my family got me a carpet set for my birthday so I'll add that to the list ... 🤣

Found a guy who enjoys fixturing/machining... we're now set up to machine the bosses for mounting studs and the pump rod hole in cylinder heads, for those who have/find heads which aren't drilled for the mechanical pump from the factory. -KB

Also, getting set-up to line bore head journals for big journal camshafts (sacrifice an ugly head for testing).

I think it was as some stage ! It's been a BMW for at least 35 years 🤣

Ha! BMW was certainly an upgrade. Are you replacing the nose completely or are you going to patch up the lower portion? My nose also has that common 2002 rust spot and I am wondering if it's patchable or if the layers under there are too difficult to work with.

New nose panel. Ive had the nose for about 3 years ......

The sides of the nose were also rotten and had a few bad repairs which had also rotted.

Nose offered up last night.

Finally got my keyless entry/alarm system up and running.  These things don’t come with directions or helpful wiring diagrams, so lots of bench testing before I figured out how it all goes together. Drilling the door/frame hole for the wire pass-through was a pain, but eventually got it all hooked up. Works like a charm, no more risk of broken off key.

Well, I went and done did it… bought me a stablemate for the ‘74 off of BAT! ‘72 project car, with good solid bones, even if there are many areas of refurbishment to come. This will be my first big retirement project. Pics to follow after I pick it up on Saturday. I’m sooooooo excited! A new roundie!

Nice work!

Any chance of doing a "how to" article in the future?

Sure, if you’re interested. It’s mostly a wiring challenge due to the aforementioned lack of wiring diagram. When I first opened the box I thought “oh no…”

Not for the purists obviously, but the alarm is a nice addition for a daily car (which mine is). Even though I rekeyed the doors to match the ignition, I also won’t miss manual unlocking. Always felt like a strain on the key and I’ve read too many “I broke off my key!!” stories.

I’ll take some more pics tomorrow and write something up on it.

In honor of my Dad who passed away from cancer 2 years ago I pinstriped my air cleaner. My dad is the reason I am a car nut today. He was a really good pinstripriper and I wish I coud learn from him today. I’ll never be as good as him. Here he is auto-crossing his 1969 corvette  circa 1972. He also had a 64 I remember being really loud with side pipes. I miss you dad.  Me with my 1961 VW bug 1986  I’ve been hooked on German cars since then.  I had that bug so low it couldn’t clear a soda can.

I'm reminded of the time one evening in Hamburg, Germany when I shut the door and my blood almost drained to my shoe level.  The keys were in the ignition.  So grateful that the door can't be locked without the key.

So I prefer to maintain the locks because I can't correct my memory as to where the keys are.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.
