What is the correct air pressures for the CN36's?  Mine are on the FPS 'tii option' rims.

The Turbo spec is 31 pounds front and rear for these tires...

Sorry, David, I work to discourage the use of the “tii option” misnomer. Even if you’re using it in jest, it’s confusing in light of an urban myth that arose suggesting that the alloys were a “tii-only” option. The early OEM alloys were a dealer option in the U.S., and could be installed on any ‘02, from 1602 to 2002tii. Outside the U.S., they were available as a dealer and a factory option, on all models from 1602 to 2002tii. Outside the U.S., however, many of the factory-installed period examples were installed as part of the Sport Paket option available on touring models.

The only relationship between the early OEM alloys and the tii model is that those “tii guys” had the most money to spend and may have bought more of the alloys, proportionately, than owners of other sub-models.

The early OEM alloy was introduced in early 1971, probably with the April 1971 introduction of the Modell 71: 12-fuse electricals, new instrument faces, long console, knee trim, long-tail rear bumpers, bumper rub strips, etc. The late OEM alloy replaced it with the introduction of the square taillight in September 1973.

Thanks and regards,

Steve

I just found out about these as well and am in contact about getting a set shipped over. How are the tires? Really interested to know! Only the 3rd V rated 185/70/13 ive seen and priced very well.

Have had a set for a few years and I think somewhat  similar to CN36, which I also have. Quiet, decent handling and a soft ride. A while ago, they were panned in a vintage tire comparison in one of the classic car mags. Watch out for date codes and shipping cost.

Wow, I had CN36s on my car in the early 80s. I loved them back then. I have 15" wheels now so I opted for a set of Bridgestone RE-71R 195/50R15. Great tires if you like them super sticky.

I found the article mentioned by Maharaja above...

Similar tires (tyres ? ) to the ones available to us in 185/70R13. Pirelli rated well, Michelin XVS too.

Thanks for digging this out, Andrew.

The XVS arose in the mid-1970’s from the XAS, with which most U.S.-bound ‘02’s arrived in the U.S. The XAS itself was designed as a high-performance tire — H-rated — in 1965. The tread patterns of the XVS and XAS are virtually identical, and hence the XVS and XAS are close sisters.

The Pirelli CA67, however, is substantially different from the CN36’s hailed in this current thread. The CA67 was introduced in 1954, and was a performance tire of the late fifties and early sixties. The CN36, on the other hand, was introduced in 1968, with the first two sizes being produced for the Fiat Dino and the 911. The tread pattern is wholly different from the now-antique CA67. Too bad we don’t have a modern test of the CN36; I suspect it’s performance far exceeds the CA67.

There is a test of the cn36 on a vintage 911, the blockley finished last in that test, though I suppose bmw_E30 will pose alternate facts to support his view of the tire world and where tires should be manufactured.... see here

I've seen the cn36 referred to as a "summer tire"....

A “summer tire” is, largely, a tire that is not an “all season” (a.k.a., “no season”) or a dedicated snow tire. In the early 1970’s, the “all season” tire had not yet been invented, so you had (a.) tires (not for snow); and (b.) snow tires.

Wet weather performance is an independent issue.

Steve

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
